Sri Lanka remains as one of the world’s most dangerous countries for independent journalists. Indi.ca reports that Lasantha Wickremetunge, one of Sri Lanka’s best known journalists was shot in the head this morning by unknown gunmen. He later succumbed to his injuries. Ground Views has details.

    Now that this government is hopeful of finishing off with the Tamil Tigers, the guns of the state are being turned on the independent media. Next in line could be the intelligentsia. Whose next? Only time will tell.

    Here is a country steadyly getting worse in many ways since independance from Britain. People in power are getting more and more authoritarian, often seriouly violent and highly corrupt. Then they go and have a photo opportunity with the religious leaders to present a peaceful image. Sri Lanka will continue to be the Sduan of Asia. Who is to blame? – Of course the people who elect them.
    In my last visit there some 8 years ago, I saw some unparalleled currution by the security forces who constantly fleece the poor tourist industry workers. Security forces are untouchables. Good luck to the population in Sri Lanka. Hope they are getting what they wanted
