It couldn't have been all so bad when Gao Xingjian was awarded the Nobel prize in Literature in 2000; Zhu Rongji congratulated the former Chinese citizen at the time, and Wikipedia maintains that his winning the Nobel Prize in its 100th anniversary year is a happy occasion for Chinese literature, even with his works having been banned in China.

Now in 2008 that Hu Jia is rumored to be a top contender for this year's Nobel Peace Prize, the news was at least reported, although quickly harmonized away, leaving just those which bear Liu Jianchao's harmonious talking point that a Nobel Peace Prize for Hu will without doubt hurt the feelings of the Chinese people, and just the rumor of it already has.

The relevant Anti-CNN post, using a Deutsche Welle report, still stands; some comments:

“诺贝尔和平奖”已经成了一个笑话。囧

The Nobel “Peace” Prize is just a joke now.

现在是谁反华最凶,谁得诺贝尔和平奖,这个由西方国家控制的国际著名奖项的针对性还真强啊,我们中国想崛起太不容易了,希望祖国加油,她们越这样做,我们应该更团结。

Now, it's whoever that's the most fiercely anti-China that gets Nobel Peace Prizes. This prominent international award, controlled by Western countries, sure gets aimed around a lot. China wants to rise up and look how hard we have it. Jiayou, motherland; the more they try and do stuff like this, the more united we should be.

过于愤怒?是严重鄙视吧!sb们爱咋地咋地。

Too angry? More like severely despising! Let those stupid c***s do whatever they want.

是真的鄙视…
这个和平,让我再一次看到了虚伪…

Truly despicable…
If you call this peace, then all I see is more hypocrisy…

若贝尔奖已经变异!变成反华奖!真是笑话!

The Nobel Prize has deviated! It's become the anti-China prize now! What a joke!

回应它作甚?记住就是了.DLLM不是20年前就得了,搞3.14的暴徒就是他,自己扇了主子的大嘴巴.

Is it worth even responding to this? Just make sure you don't forget it. Didn't the Dalai Lama win it 20 years ago? It was him that was behind the Lhasa riots this year, stirring things up with his big mouth.

真令人怀疑,若贝尔和平奖评审人员是不是被阉割过??怎么这么荒唐呀??!!

Really makes you wonder, have the Nobel Peace Prize judges been castrated or what? How could they be so preposterous??!!

若贝尔和平奖=阴谋 颠覆 政府奖?

Nobel Peace Prize=Plot to Subvert the Government Prize?

西方人真正是掩耳盗铃啊,一边还幻想中国去救市一边还对中国说三道四的,难道我们中国人好欺负吗

Those Westerners really are just fooling themselves! On one hand they fantasize about China coming to rescue their markets, and on the other hand go and tell China what to do and how to do it. Do they really think us Chinese are so easy to bully around?

And from the more influential message board Paowang, comments on the Liu Jianchao ‘hurt feelings' statement:

Is this representative of the Chinese public opinion? This post seem rather biased to me. What of the people who genuinely happy for the achievement of their countryman regardless of his anti-CCP stance? Do they delete those comments right away?

There was a fair amount written about this by the big names at Bullog all of which seemed pretty positive. Aside from that, all I’ve seen is a translation at YeeYan (link) and the first few comments could be described as the kind of bashing one can predict with a fairly high degree of certainty. Zhou “Zuola” Shuguang shows up and offers those guys a raise to 1 yuan per comment if they’ll start saying nice things about Hu Jia, and then the comments from there on down are more technical and somewhat off-topic. Zan Aizong wrote a longer piece on his blog, but I honestly haven’t seen anything more than that.

well, i dont believe people at Anti-cnn know who hujia is….
i still get chill although i know well what kind website anti-cnn is….

yeah right, your phony indignation of “get chill…” ain’t gonna hack it. why don’t you put attention to the chinese reporter who was fired by DW-TV because of her fair and balanced reporting.

Wasn’t Hu Jia advocating for good changes and more human rights and freedom? I don’t think he did wrong things and the CCP just hates him because they are against human rights and freedoms. So why do these Chinese commentors take CCPs side and say that Hu is anti China? Can’t someone criticize the government be pro China? Doesn’t Hu Jia’s wishes for change reflect his love for China and Chinese people? Will The masses side with the CCP no matter what even if the CCP is bad for the country and people? Why is it considered anti China to exercise democratic freedom of thought and express opinion and wish for evolution and civilized society?

I think the Chinese people should not keep digging a hole to support the CCP, they should evolve and support their countrymen who stand up and voice their opinion because that is great for the evolution of society, opinions need to be shared, not just the one opinion dictated by the propaganda department. If I was Chinese I would be proud of Hu Jia, even though the government is against him. CCP does not equal China, dignity and humanity is Chinas culture and civilization, not silencing opinions and persecuting thinkers.

these anti-cnn fellas are so ignorant beyond belief. do they ever take a step back and have a look at china’s political system and actually wonder why there is so much western criticism? you just cant argue with people that cant seem to separate their party loyalty with genuine patriotism. i am sick to death of these ‘anti-cnn’ crowd claiming ‘anti-china’ when its clearly anti-ccp or anti-chinese political system. when the heck are they going to realise that? even blind patriotism has its limits.

CCP has the support of overwhelming majority youth, most of them a well educated and the most active components on the web, blogs, BBS, while the generation of their parents and grandparents are tend to be more critical of the government. Hu Jia is a great activist. I don’t thing he is anti-CCP, let alone anti-China. He deserves recognition for his activities. On the other hand, Noble Peace Price’s decision on awarding the price sometimes is clearly targeting something else. Western media’ bias and hostility is by far the single biggest factor (other than China’s economic prosperity in last 20 years) pushing the Chinese youth who are the beneficiaries of economic boom, to take CCP/government’s stance.

  8. carryanne:

Jimmy, don’t get your shorts in a know, it seems like these people are so dumb, but actually a lot of them are just party shills, they are CCP people trolling the net making it look like people think such and such a way, trying to pass off their brand of fabricated faux logic.

The youth in China are raised without culture, they are raised on absolute materialism, so they will easily sell out for money (not all) and they have been raised on lies and false history. They did not live through the Cultural Revolution and other psycho campaigns and what they hear about the recent history is fabricated by the party, the party pervades everything, trying to change the truth and it’s not too hard to pull off on these modern youth whose parents are not even all too clear and who are too broken and afraid to teach their children culture and truth.

I think that truth in China would greatly solve the whole issue of these people who defend and love the party and believe the party is above them and their country. If CNN and other media knew how to report on China… They should do a much better job, but it’s like they don’t know how important this is… They say this and that but seem not to really want to help China and Chinese people.

“The youth in China are raised without culture, they are raised on absolute materialism, so they will easily sell out for money (not all) and they have been raised on lies and false history.” Really?

Seriously, can you get more holier-than-thou condescending with your generalized dismission of a few hundred million people, please? You’re coming pretty close to the line of outright racism now, so why not just cross it.

  12. carryanne:
    12

Yeah, you’re right, it is an overgeneralization. It happens sometimes when you are talking about a nation that is under totalitarian rule and whose media and info is controlled by one source… You have a lot of people thinking stuff based on that source. The CCP has eroded Chinese culture so what I said about no culture is true. If there is culture in China then its the exception, there are probly lots of exceptions but the usual, ho hum everyday culture is such that I described.

It has nothing to do with race of course, so it cant be racist, I’m talking about the normal outcome of mind control under totalitarian terrorism.

Thanks for pointing that out, you are right, I dont want to ignore those people who actually are great people.

  13. carryanne:
    13

    here: http://chinadigitaltimes.net/2008/10/answering-those-questions-on-the-southern-weekend/

Finally I hear a few encouraging words from people in China whose minds are functioning in a way that can benefit themselves and society, not this CCP harmony drivel.

  14. wgj:
    14

Just because the CCP is reaching for total control of the media doesn’t mean all information is indeed under effective control of the CCP. And just because the CCP (among many other things) has a certain eroding effect on the Chinese culture (however that is defined) doesn’t mean culture has been eradicated from China. To think otherwise is — again — incredibly condescending and a plain insult to human intelligence. By the way, do you know that many European think America has no culture because the country is just too young?

Contrary to North Korea, information is actually free for consumers in today’s China — in that anyone who wants to be informed can easily get around the Great Firewall and find all the public information available to the world at large. It’s neither technically complicated nor does it carry any danger of prosecution. Of course for information producers and publishers, the country is still anything but free. So the Chinese may not be as well informed as they could be, but if you think they’re a bunch of brainwashed zombies, you’re just as stupid as a dictator who believes he can fool all the people all the time.

  15. john:
    15

aside form that, the ccp has actually lift some restrictions off it’s control over media/press. and also, they did erode some aspect of culture, that is Superstition, to some degree though.

I regret that the much neglected language,Esperanto did not receive the Nobel Peace Prize. At least nine British MP’s nominated this global language, for the Prize.

Within a short period of 121 years Esperanto is now placed within the top 100 languages, out of 6,000 worldwide according to the CIA factbook. It it the 17th most used language by Wikipedia, and it is in active use by Facebook and Skype.

Solid arguments for Esperanto can be seen on the Youtube video, by Professor Piron, a former translator at the United Nations.

FU JK! Aren’t you ashame of using JK’s name to mask your own? I hate saying that to our past president!

Hopefully Obama will befriend China, and not bully her. I would like him to fire Pelosi - not because she wears botox made from China (she looks good in it though,) but because she joined force with republican for terrorizing the olympics . . . .

Just a general observation. I hope Obama will NOT fund the stupid little programs for writing up crazy stuff to demonize China.

At anyone who thinks Chinese are brainwashed!

JK at least Chinese understand in depth the meaning of “patriotism” We are NOT too sensitive to get hurt, but we stand behind the principle that is right for the better of the big picture.

I don’t think Americans fully grasp the concept of what it means to be patriotic!

Yes the economy we are in sucks, and the Iraq war sucks! Yes we have the right to bash our governments. People act like they are so sick of Bush, and that makes me laugh out loud. Eight years ago, 9/11 you were crawling to your saver to stand up for you, and today, all that is forgotten?! The situation we are in is the result of the American government, not just Bush himself!

Republicans are known to have warlike attitudes, that’s not a suprise. That’s why we voted Democrat this time! Right now Obama is taking over red rolls of accounting records, the economy mess to clean up, etc, God forbid he will make one little mistake in his term no matter what it is, what are people gonna say in four years!

Oh I remember Clinton did so much for our economy. Remember “Surplus” and world peace? He made one little personal mistake, and you people thought he was satan!!!!

You called yourselves “patriotics” and Chinese brain washed zombies, well it looks like it’s the other way around!!!!!!

  21. knights:
    21

Although I am relieved that Obama got elected. We need Democrat to control the executive and Congress for a change!

I still see the American society’s prejudice against women and old age! Look at the bashing of Hillary Clinton and Sarah Palin. Poor Palin! Poor McCain, at 72 is treated like a piece trash even though he served the USA, and he got tortured overseas for five years for his patriotic service.

I can not but make a few remarks about your holier-than-thou words. By which approach r u on earth informed with ur knowldges about China? What evidence r u holding to claim that people who took the opposite side to u, or who just gave the country her due here are dumb and CCP people trolling the net? I’m an ordinary Chinese citizen. I take a job in a finance Co.I’m fed up with ur ignorant & hostile slander about our country and even chinese youth! U’ve always been boasting of ur objective and justice, while u’ve always been indoctrinated inumerable distorted news about China, and u just accept what u r willing to accept in an arrogant and over self-assured manner. Why not just go to China and see her with ur own eyes? U suggested we should why there is so much western criticism. And I’d like to suggest u ever took a step back, broadened ur narrowed views and actually wondered why there is so much chinese criticism? Do u have a knowedge of the existence of another eastern values? R u really aquaited with the life style we chinese citizens prefer, thus respectful to this ? Admittedly, there’s margin for our country and government to make promotion in economicly and politically. In my view, every govern’ on the world is by no means perfect. While we’r doing our utmost to improve the current situation, what r u doing now? Invasion to the small but abundant with crude oil counties? I just wonder why there r countries like urs that exploit on one side our ecological entironment resources, and on the other hand, demonize us? U know, the statistics here say every product the chinese manufactur for 1 dollar income creat 9 dollar value for the US importers, who gain a gross profit as 3.6 dollar.
What I’m saying means not so much a complaint as an appearl for understanding. We r a moderate and nonaggressive country for thousands of years, and we expect at least comprehension and respect from u, though without ur sense of guilt on ur invasion and robbery of us in the first half of the twentieth century.
