Ratko Mladic, the top commander of the Bosnian Serb army during Bosnia’s 1992-95 war, has been accused by the International Criminal Tribunal of the UN, in The Hague, Netherlands, of war crimes, in the massacre of Muslims by Bosnian Serb forces in eastern Bosnia and the 4-year siege of Sarajevo.

In the Sabra and Shatila massacre that took place in the Sabra and Shatila Palestinian refugee camps in Beirut, Lebanon in September 1982, Ariel Sharon, the top commander of the Israeli army, was held personally responsible. Palestinian and Lebanese civilians were massacred by Christian Lebanese Phalangists while the camp was surrounded by the Israel Defense Force, commanded by Sharon.

In 1982, an independent commission chaired by Sean MacBride concluded that the Israeli authorities or forces were, directly or indirectly, responsible.

Mladic is now to face the ICC whilst Sharon was never brought before a court to answer criminal charges.
