Ghana: On the medal controversy

Ghana Unite for Development comments on the recent gold medal controversy in GhanaCan we really continue producing gold here in Ghana: “I was really surprised when I read that the award medals were purchased for the total price of £740,000 from a jeweler in UK […] Can we really continue producing gold here in Ghana, selling the raw gold and then after that buy back our own gold for outrageous prices from those same people who bought it from us”.

  • Hi Elia – sadly this is exactly what is happening with all of Ghana and Africa’s resources – cocoa, coffee, gold etc.
Not until African governments invest in training and infrastructure to process these resources locally, will the situation change. The refining and processing of any mineral is where the money is made. It has taken Ghana far too long to take control of their own resources. Instead greedy politicians line their pockets in deals with foreign companies, always thinking short term, while the continent is raped and pillaged. Would Ghana have any significant quantity of gold to sell if it weren’t for the investment, technoology and processes of the foreign companies? The same thing is happening right now as they’ve discovered the motherload of oil of the coast of Ghana. None of this would have even been discovered if it had been left to Ghanaians. Now that it is found, the politicians’ eyes are wide and greed will creep in. The country will not prosper if attitudes don’t change. In fact it will slide the slippery slope into the current reality of Nigeria if they’re not careful.
