Sierra Leone: Six months in Sierra Leone

A Sierra Leonean blogger writes about her experience after moving back to Sierra Leone from USA: “I’ve been in Sierra Leone for 6 months now and I must say…its been hard, frustrating, humbling, and lonely. When I first got here my sense of purpose was strong and comforting. I knew I was here to make a difference and a difference I would make indeed.”

I was in Sierra Leone for 6 months and had a really good time. I was up country most of the time in Kenema. I really liked being around the people I worked with and have made so long time friends. The places where I lived were with families and that worked really well for me. Some people stayed in these hostel type things and they hated it. I had hot water everyday. The family I stayed with had were very accomodating. Only problem was that the cook was not always diverse with what she made. There was this lovely cafe in town though “Diaspora” that I enjoyed. I was there doing interviews. Once I got passed people asking for money because they were so desperately poor.

I plan on going back next summer for three months.
