Will the Tanzanian President, Jakaya Kikwete, support Mwai Kibaki?: At the same time the latest strategy of the govenmnt is to seek support from other African countries other than Uganda (which so far is the only country on the planet that has congratulated Kibaki on his “re-election.”

I do not claim to totally understand President Jakaya Mrisho Kikwete’s mind but I have no doubt that he is a very,very intelligent man! He is one of the true and faithful “students” and “disciples” of the founding father of Tanzania, the late Mwalimu Kambarage Nyerere.
Unlike the “pop-up” leaders like Uhuru Kenyatta, President Kikwete has been a leader right from elementary school. He has military training and experience which has instilled in him a lot of discipline thus he doesnt rush to make decisions.
Am sure President Kikwete will play his cards right by being friendly to both Mwai Kibaki and Raila Odinga but he will not come out in the open and show that he is taking sides.
It is at such times that I wish Mwalimu Nyerere was still alive. I believe he would have stood for democracy and justice. I also believe that he would have been man enough to speak his mind openly.
I like President Kikwete and I followed his election campaign closely since I was in Tanzania at that time but I still think that he needs to come out in the open and start giving leadership in East Africa at crucial moments like this. National sovereignity is important but democracy is a higher ideal that any leader worth his salt needs to fight for and safeguard at all costs.
The issue at stake in Kenya, East Africa and Africa at large right now is democracy. Mwai Kibaki is trying to kill democracy and the autonomy of all government institutions in Kenya. He is muzzling the freedom of the press and exposing his dictatorial traits in every step that he takes. It is a high time that the leaders in East Africa came out openly and spoke against such retrogressive acts by one of their own!
