Denmark: Canada occupies Denmark

Fjordman points out that Denmark and Canada are headed for a potential showdown over ownership of Hans Island, a tiny, uninhabited speck of land between Greenland and Ellesmere Island. Here's a link to Google Maps, showing exactly where it is.

The whole thing is a bit silly.
I have trouble believing that this is going to ‘snowball’ (punny?) into some kind of Acrtic Falklands. It stands to reason that two nations like Denmark and Canada, who have many more similarities than differences will solve the issue with some type of compromise. The fact is, despite ‘potential resource exploitation’, Canada’s main concern is re-affirming it’s Arctic claim…there is a precedent for other nations not respecting it due to it being largely unpatrolled.
Bill Graham is simply ‘rattling the sabre’ a little bit so as not to appear weak. Childish? Maybe…but that’s politics for you…
If you look at the size of Canada and the VAST number of resources we are custodians for, it is clearly apparent that an island less than 1.5 km square (I believe) is not going to make or break things for us.

I am a member of the Canadian Forces, and feel obliged to say that, contrary to public opinion (typically an uninformed public), the CF (though somewhat underfunded) is anything but weak, and have always been experts at doing more with less, so to speak…our duty is the defence of this rather sizable land mass and it’s corresponding waters with the resources we have at our disposal…resources that I can’t imagine would be wasted fighting people who are not really our enemies over a frozen rock in the middle of nowhere.
I’d like to think that with our country’s military and social history we have actually LEARNED something.
THAT should be recognized as the real strength of a nation…
