Venezuela's October 7, 2012, presidential election was the most contested and intense in the last decade. Despite the opposition's hopes for a change, President Hugo Chávez gained a clear victory over opponent Henrique Capriles, adding six more years to his current 14-year rule. With this victory, Chávez is poised to lead the country for 20 years, from 1999 to 2019.

The traffic on social networks –particularly on Twitter– was extremely intense before, during, and after the elections. Venezuelans are avid Twitter users, making this platform their main means to communicate, debate, and share information. Citizens and organizations also set up crowdsourcing maps and monitoring initiatives to expose and record abuses during the campaign.
