A presidential election will be held in Egypt on 23 and 24 May 2012 (with a run-off on 16 and 17 June 2012, if necessary). It will be the second presidential election in Egypt's history (since 2005) with more than one candidate, and the first presidential election since the Egyptian revolution in 2011.

Parliamentary elections in the Arab Republic of Egypt took place on the 28 November, 2011, the first to occur since the fall of former President Hosni Mubarak earlier this year. The parliament is responsible for appointing the committee that drafts a new constitution, paving the way to the presidential elections. New parties have been formed and formerly banned groups are allowed to enter the elections for the first time; the remnants of Mubarak's regime are also fighting for their place.
