GV content and style guide

We're thrilled to have you as a Global Voices author!

In order that everything works smoothly, here are some guidelines. We ask that you follow them when posting so that everything goes in the right place.

If you have any questions, please don't hesitate to contact us: globalvoices DOT online AT gmail DOT com.

BASIC INSTRUCTIONS FOR POSTING ON THE BLOG:

NOTE: In the current structure, we now have 3 parent categories: CATEGORIES, TYPE, and WORLD. PLEASE DO NOT CHECK the parent categories. You only check the sub and sub-sub categories.

weblogpost
1. When posting, you MUST select ONE of the “TYPE” labels:

- weblog
- roundups
- podcasts
[Ask yourself “is this a weblog entry, a podcast or a roundup entry?” It shouldn't be more than one.]

(NOTE: Only designated regional editors should be checking the “roundup” category. If you are not a regional editor, please do not check that category in order to ensure that the blog structure and format works as designed. )

————————————————
2. Everything posted *should* also be labeled with relevant regions and countries, from the WORLD set of labels, e.g.:

- Americas
- - Aruba
- - Bahamas
————————————————
3. Weblog and Podcasts entries can also be labeled with “CATEGORIES” labels such as:

- About GVO
- Announcements
- Books, etc …
(optional in Podcasts case… it works but isn't necessary)
————————————————

Please also take a look at this Style Guide, compiled on our wiki by the hard-working Paul Frankenstein.

IMPORTANT NOTE ON PHOTOS: Maximum photo width is 350 px in weblog posts.

UPDATE: Halley Xie points out that the original interview was posted here on Chinastic.com, a site for which she is an editor.

Leylop mainly focuses on her daily life, music, culture, travels abroad, and perspective on the world as a young Chinese woman. Read her latest blog post about her job working with foreign English teachers employed to teach at summer language camps. She describes how other Chinese react to non-Chinese visitors, and how her perspective on what it means to be a “foreigner” has changed over time. As a recent college graduate, work can be an eye-opener onto the real world.

FURTHER NOTE ON CATEGORIES:

We now have the following regional categories inside the WORLD parent:
- Americas
- E. Europe, Russia, Caucasus & Central Aisa
- Middle East & North Africa
- East Asia
- South Asia
- Sub-Saharan Africa
- Western Europe
- Oceania

No method of dividing up the world is ideal but this is the one we'll be using for now. We are dividing the world according to a combination of two factors 1) frequent practice in the way news organizations divvy up the world and 2) the number of regional editors we can afford to hire. (Our current funding enables us to hire 6 part time regional editors to cover the first 6 regions. The last two will be covered in the weblog but not in the roundups for now.)

NOTE: You should also check all individual countries included in a given post, so people can go back and search the archive according to country category, or subscribe to a specific country category's RSS feed.

PODCASTING:
We're excited about doing regular podcasts and “Skypecasts.” If you're interested in contributing podcasts, please get in touch with us for further instructions.

roundups
INSTRUCTIONS FOR PUBLISHING A ROUNDUP POST:
(This is for the roundups appearing in the middle column only - and for regional editors and other designated authors only.)

- One post per item. ( One item = one sentence or maximum two. One or two links on the same subject and country.)

- Under TYPE check “Roundup” only .

- Under WORLD be sure to check regional category AND country category.

- Under CATEGORIES do not check any items.

- With roundups, titles will not appear on the site but they will become part of the permalink so they must be something you would use for a publicly visible title.

- Please no block-quotes in the daily roundups (They're fine - great - in the features section where you may end up doing more specialized roundup posts, but they don't work in the middle column).
