Indonesian netizens are calling for the release of two officials of an anti-graft body who were arrested for allegedly abusing their powers and accepting bribes. For many Indonesians, the two men represent the nation's fight against corruption.

Last Thursday two commissioners of the Corruption Eradication Committee (KPK), Chandra M. Hamzah and Bibit Samad Rianto, were arrested for abusing their powers and accepting bribes.

In response to the arrest of the KPK officials, President Yudhoyono said that the arrest is not extrordinary and that he will not intervene with the work of the National Police (Polri).

Yusro, wrote an article [id] in Politikana that highlights an odd argument made by Inspector General Dikdik Mulyana Arif Mansur, the Deputy in Chief of the Criminal Division of the Indonesian National Police:

The reasons of their arrest are, among others, because the two suspended KPK commissioners are charged with more than 5 years jail term, and the rest is classic - the National Police was worried that Bibit and Chandra will escape, dissipate evidences, and repeat the same crime, (reasons) as written in Criminal Law.

However, the more surprising excuse was: (If they're free) Bibit and Chandra can hold press conferences. “We're now in fact being prosecuted through (public) rumors and incriminating accusations. These suspects can hold press conferences, that indicates that they can influence public opinion,” said Dikdik.

The chronology of Bibit-Chandra's arrest, which appeared on Pesatnews.com, suggests that the two non active commissioners were framed because they were leading an investigation that could involve one of Polri's big wigs.

23 JuniI 2009
KPK menyatakan Direktur PT Masaro Radiokom Anggoro Widjojo ditetapkan sebagai tersangka korupsi pengadaan alat komunikasi terpadu Departemen Kehutanan pada 2007.

30 Juni 2009

23 June 2009

KPK declared Anggoro Widjojo, the director of Masaro Radiocom, Ltd. as a corruption suspect in the communication device procurement for the Ministry of Forestry back in 2007.

30 June 2009

Head of Criminal Division of Indonesian National Police Rusno Duadji, who was handling the case of Bank Century at that time, claimed that his phone call was intercepted. Afterwards, KPK admitted that it was investigating a bribery case against one of the national police's executives with the initials SD, who's linked to the Century case.

10 July 2009
Rusno met Anggoro, the KPK's suspect, in Singapore.

To many Indonesian officials, KPK is a strong institution that could change the course of the traditional system. There are high hopes that KPK could be the master solution to a systematic corruption eradication.

Rob Baiton, who blogs at RAB Experience, said that the president's decision not to interfere with the case is rather bizarre as the case unfolds:

The fact that the president, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono or SBY, gave a press conference indicating that he would not be interfering in the process. Strange because he has already imposed himself on the process when he issued an interim law to appoint three new, albeit temporary, commissioners to the KPK. So, to say he would not interfere seems a little strange.

A few days before the arrest, a transcript of a wiretapped phone call, between the corruption suspects and other unnamed persons, circulated on the internet. At one point the name of the president and two other first echelon officials were mentioned. The phone conversation suggests the arrest was staged and there's a plan to bring down the KPK as a graft fighting institution.

Baiton elaborates:

The president is also smarting because a transcript of an alleged wiretap highlighting that the police and the office of the attorney general conspired to frame Chandra and Bibit has surfaced. Why is he smarting? Maybe because his name came up as being aware of the frame.

Although the president has said he will not interfere in the process, he has nevertheless instructed the Chief of Police to take all necessary steps to uncover the wiretapper and bring them to justice. Sounds a little like closing the barn door once the horse has bolted. But, Mr. President, it is time to clean this mess up, isn't it?

As closure, Baiton highlighted what could Yudhoyono's legacy be:

Ultimately, these shenanigans are going to be a “legacy crusher” for SBY. He will be remembered as the president that talked a good game on anti-corruption but could never deliver the goods. In fact, he will be remembered for presiding over the demise of one of the few success stories in the fight against corruption in Indonesia.

On Sunday, President Yudhoyono invited four experts, one from Transparency International Indonesia and the rest are professors from big universities, to discuss about KPK situation and options.

Brett McGuire, an Intellectual Property Right expert based in Jakarta wonders why the president consulted these four experts before consulting the Constitutional Court or the Administrative Court, blogged on Spruiked:

The fact that the President consulted with three universities is telling. It shows just how complex he considers the issue to be.

[…]

There might be a legal-constitutional reason why the President has not spoken to the judiciary (assuming that he hasn't).

[…]

The Constitutional Court has wasted no time criticizing the President for his ill-advised actions, particularly the ridiculous PERPPU. Given the President's sensitivities (remember he said he had been “awfully hurt”), it could well be that the President can't see beyond his own personal issues.

The KPK, according to McGuire, is the institution that helped Yudhoyono won his second term. It's his duty not to see it crumbled:

What can we learn from this? The President can no longer sit back and let things happen — not when they are of national importance, and most certainly not when they have a direct impact on his credibility. He won the election because of the KPK. He has shamelessly ridden on the coat-tails of their success. He must protect them.

He owes it to the people who elected him.

Concerned Indonesian citizens are showing their support online and offline.

More than 400, 380 facebookers joined a group called A Million Facebookers Supporting Chandra Hamzah and Bibit Samad Riyanto.

Twitterers use hastag #dukungkpk or support KPK to show their support and voice opinions.

Offline, a group of people started a black shirt campaign. Last Monday, Indonesians were encouraged to wear black ribbon as a sign of mourning for the death of truth and justice and to show support for the release of the two men who represent the nation's fight against corruption.

In Indonesia, corruption is seen as vicious cycle that hampers the economy and rusting the people's trust of justice institutions such as the police and the court. According to a survey released in 2009 by Transparency International Indonesia, the Polri is named the most corrupt institution in the country by respondents, who are mainly businessmen.

President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono of Indonesia took his oath marking his second term as head of state of the world's most populous Muslim country. Bloggers, twitterers, and plurkers share their reactions to this event

By Allah I swear I will adhere to the constitution as faithfully as possible, and will commit myself to the country and the people.

On Tuesday, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono took his presidential oath marking his second term as head of state of the world's most populous Muslim country.

Boediono was also sworned in as Vice President in the same event. He is Indonesia's first non-politician Vice President.

Twitterers and plurkers comment and welcome the new chapter of Yudhoyono's administration:

Riefky_kp: Today, October 20, was the president and vice president inauguration in Indonesia. Congrats to SBY and Boediono!

G_liciousS: couldn't watch the inauguration of the president bcoz of this long BLACKOUT.. uuurgh, mmg katu Indonesia.. ckc…

jacksonkumaat: @presidensby @Boediono Congrats for the inauguration. pray Indonesia is run with the same level of excellence, visionary & good character

President Yudhoyono has been through a series of ultimate lows in his previous administration term, ranging from natural disasters like the 2004 Aceh tsunami and 2006 Central Java earthquake, to separatism threats coming from the country's easternmost provinces.

The former Army general also managed to reach agreement between the central government with GAM (Free Aceh Movement), a separatist group which has been aiming to establish Aceh as an independent Muslim state.

Corruption remains a big issue in Indonesia. Corruption is a known factor that chased away investors, both domestic and foreign. Because of its prevalence in the country, Indonesian development plans remain in status quo.

Back in 2004, President Yudhoyono made corruption eradication one of his top priority on his first 100 days, since then prosecutions have been made including one of Yudhoyono's in laws but no real change among public servants - bribery, cronyism, and nepotism are still considered as popular highways to success.

In this year's inaugural speech, the president said that the spirit of perseverance and the spirit of not giving up are important to uphold good governance and eradicate corruption, however he didn't highlight corruption eradication as his administration priority.

Despite so, according to one report the people see the president's effort in combating corruption as positive [id].

Indonesian bloggers have high hopes on Yudhoyono's new administration.

Even though the new cabinet is not yet formed, some Indonesian bloggers have already written their opinions.

Lila wrote an article on Politikana, a 2.0 platform popular among Indonesian political commentators, saying that the successor of the minister of communication might jeapordize freedom of expression and eventually, online freedom:

By appointing Tifatul Sembiring from the PKS party to lead the Department of Communication and Information gives the impression that the Yudhoyono and Boediono duo isn't putting enough attention on strategic ministries.

[…]

What we should be afraid of is that PKS, which is the front defenders of the Anti Pornographic Law, will conduct internet censorship in massive scale. Administrators of websites that include Miyabi as contents or adult forums such as one belonging to Kaskus, should prepare themselves of being banned or at least inaccessible from Indonesian territory.

Lila also questions the ability of the future communication minister, who comes from a hardline party, to take stern action against website admins who incite hate towards other religions, sects, or even democracy.

While Lila felt that appointing the wrong minister could end up preserving “the enveloppe below the table” practices, Wahyudi, who also wrote a post on Politikana, states the importance of embracing the 2.0 platform to obtain the good governance goal.

Indonesia is currently in the middle of launching a new operation system, along SBY2.0 reelection and his swearing in. Unfortunately SBY's 2.0 version hasn't proved to compete the internet's 2.0 paradigm, which offers its users to reciprocately create and exchange new and uselful things.[…]

So far, I haven't seen any government's or parliament members' initiative to include the most important element in a democratic country: its people, to establish a productive state environment together, upon the foundation of participation of various elements of a country: the people, the people's representatives and the government. The platform I'm seeing now is identical to the previous versions that we've all seen, which is a platform that prioritize political elites. Its nature remains the same: untransparent, no obvious reference to measure quality (of their work), does not promote people's participation by not providing an open platform for the people to assess data and information which could benefit the public.

Just as an operating system before it reaches the market, we will be given an update or patches to install in order to camouflage the defects of that operating system. Hopefully, us too, will receive new update or patches in years to come for the betterment of the country and the state.

Indonesia held its first presidential election as a democratic country in 1999, after being ruled by General Soeharto for more than 30 years, making it one of the youngest democratic countries in the world. The country's president is only allowed to have a maximum of two consecutive terms.

Noordin M. Top, Indonesia's most wanted man, was confirmed dead after being involved in a shoot-out with police forces. Indonesian twitterrers were quick to react to this story.

On Thursday morning, the Indonesian Anti-Terrorism Special Unit Densus 88 was reported to be in the middle of shoot-out with a small Islamic hardliner group at the outskirt of Solo, Central Java. Ono of the men involved in the incident was identified as Noordin M. Top, Indonesia's most wanted man.

Top and four of his accomplices died after 9 hours of shootout.

The National Chief Police, Police General Bambang Hendarso Danuri said [id] that there are 14 points on the militant's fingers that matched with the police record. Danuri also said that the success of the raid was a blessing during the holy month of Ramadan.

The twitterers cheered the accomplishment:

Breaking the fast together with the reporters at the Presidential Palace, President Yudhoyono said that he extends his highest regards to the Police and Detachment 88 for their hard work in fighting terrorism.

The president also said that the country should remain vigilant, because despite of Noordin's death the terrorist cells he created are still eluding capture [id], therefore the world needs to join hands in combating the roots of extremism and terrorism.

Indonesia's Parliament has recently approved a new film law which drew strong reactions from the local movie industry. It is feared that the law would legitimize the government's tighter control over creativity and self expression in the industry.

The Indonesian movie-making industry is criticizing the newly revised Film Law [id]. The law is deemed to leave a small room for creativity, and putting the survival of the industry under the government's tight supervision.

If the agonizing law is strictly implemented, the flourishing landscape of national cinema will surely turn to a different direction.

Film critic Totot Indrarto wrote an opinion [id] on local journal Kompas:

Since the law's draft was first introduced, numerous components of Indonesia's film community, through various constitutional-abiding ways and channels, have declared disagreements on several points. Which are, prohibition to make films with certain content; limiting the producers to use the required manpower and technology; film production should start by registering the title, plot, and production plan; the Board of Censorship still has great authority; people who work on film industry need to be certified from professional organization, professional certification agency or college; film's distribution, screening, appreciation, archiving, and export-import are controlled based on minister's decree; numerous horrible administrative sanctions and criminal charges.

The substance of the film law is clearly extremely bureaucratic, excessive, and quite repressive. The grand idea (of this law) is to diminish the big splash from the Indonesian film communities which demand movie issues to be returned to the hands of the movie people.

Some professionals feared that the law could trigger a massive wave of unemployment, since one point of the law imposed job related certification for those who wish to remain in the industry.

Iman Fatah wondered if the law would force him turn away jobs:

Poin #9 (chapter 68) could have great impact, since, in Indonesia, the majority of those who work in the industry learned things autodidactly and through experience, (mainly) because there are so few formal education to be found. So what will happen to me as music scorer and producer who learned autodidactly? Does this mean that I can't make film score anymore?

Herman Saksono said that the House of Representatives, though on paper has a noble intention to protect the survival of film industry, isn't choosing the right path. Saksono pointed out that imposing 60% of local film quota is an excessive protectionism move.

Akibatnya, kualitas film kita jadi buruk.

First of all we do agree that the initiative to protect our national potential is something that's both noble and important.

[…]

Excessive protectionism will give birth to the schoolyard champions. With 60% quota, film producers will make low quality movies for the sake to fulfill the quota given by the House of Representatives.

As the result, the quality of our movies deteriorate. Quantity over quality. In fact 90% of Indonesian films are bad. So, the bad ones will surely keep on appearing. This is not hypothesis, it's a fact just like when the government imposed local TV channels to air at least 70% of local productions in the beginning of the 90s.

He added that the industry requires a bigger space in order to improve a more creative atmosphere:

Perhaps the House of Representatives forgot that in order to compete in the global creative industry what the people need is a room for expression and bureaucracy ease, not shortcut and cheatsheet.

Wina Armada Sukardi, a journalist and also a film critic, said there are few of weak points on the new law which systematically restrain the improvement of the currently growing movie industry:

[…]

Keenam, peranan pemerintah terlalu dominan memasuki hampir seluruh aspek perfilman.

Fourth, the current censorship system still use the “cut” system instead of pure classification. Sure there's a classification or age classification, but the producer still needs to follow the “taste” of the censorship agency. And this caused half-hearted censorship by classification system.

[…]

Sixth, government's role is too dominant and is included in nearly all aspects of the movie making business. Goverment's involvement isn't limited on financial aid and strategic matters, but also to thingamajig affairs. Therefore not much left for the movie people to control and express themselves.

However, he added, the industry shouldn't cry over spilled milk and should consider this as a lesson, so that in the future everybody who's involved in the business would fight together defending their common freedom of expression…

The birth of the new Film Law has taught yet another lesson to everyone in the national film industry: not to be ignorant of the right of their fellow film making professionals. All these times, the film people tends to mind about their own business and ignore the others (who are involved in the same industry). They react only when their interest is being disturbed.

It is the non-film industry people who are (more seriously) fighting the substance of the new Film Law, so it will have more freedom of expression and a more conducive condition for the national movie industry. From pro-democracy activists to cultural journalists followed closely the updates of the issue. The movie makers came later on, and in small numbers.

It's not surprising if on the midst of that passiveness, another party took initiative to rearrange the national film industry according to their version. So, in fact, the Film Law is indeed the price to pay by those in film industry for their less than proactive demeanors.

Hundreds who are against the new law signed an online petition, and a Facebook Group was set-up for this cause.

Hutomo Mandala Putra, the youngest son of former Indonesian President Soeharto, returns to the political arena with a bang. He seeks chairmanship of his father's political party Golkar. Indonesian bloggers speak about this political twist in the archipelagic country.

The son of the former president Soeharto, Hutomo Mandala Putra announced that he's ready to be the chairman of one of Indonesia's prominent political party Golongan Karya (Golkar).

In 2002, Tommy, as he is affectionatelly called, was convicted for corruption, illegal arms possession and evading justice after he was found masterminding an assasination of Supreme Court Judge Syafiuddin Kartasasmita [id].

The court sentanced him to 15 years of jail, however, he was released in 2006 after serving only four years of his term.

Interviewed by the local media, Tommy said that it is his moral obligation and his personal calling to return to politics, to manage Golkar, the party that his father founded and formed.

Supreme Court Judge Syafiuddin KartasasmitaSupreme Court J

According to Nanang, Tommy's political move is a predictable one, but it's too soon.

It's quite surprising for me to hear Tommy Suharto has decided to return to the world of politics this early. Moreover, to learn that he chooses [to do it] through Golkar party which his father, the deceased Soeharto helped founded. I thought that he will of course return to the world of politics (but not this soon) and that he will establish a new party or perhaps he'll join one of the newly established parties. Gerindra for example, with Prabowo who's known to be closely tied with the Cendana family [writer's note: Soeharto's clan].

Even with the efforts to rebrand the party, the New Order continues to overshadow Golkar, said Nanang.

[…]

[…]

Golkar and the (Soeharto's regime) New Order are hard to be separated from one another. Golkar is always identifiable as a part of the New Order. Post reformation, Akbar Tanjung as well as Jusuf Kalla worked hard to revise that image. Golkar claimed that it's the most successfully reformed party. The new Golkar, has nothing to do with the New Order (Cendana family). But having Tommy as Chairman candidate would make what ever efforts made by Akbar Tanjung and Jusuf Kalla useless. Golkar can become a blunder if Tommy managed to become this party's chairman. No more reformation, what would happen is that Tommy will continue a leadership model like his father's. Apple doesn't fall far from its tree.

Pelopor said that Tommy will hardly succeed in getting what he wants:

Perhaps the guy can’t help it. He has been raised in a family used to pull the strings, to set the rules, to be the law and take the money, after all. Anyone would get his personality twisted by such kind of education. It’s incurable apparently.

Well, he will not succeed of course. There is only this hope left for him: some good friend should tell he him he had better hide under a stone for the rest of his life.

a0z0ra commented on Pelopor's post, saying:

Wrong timing. People are still super mad at him, and he hasn’t do anything about that yet.

Let’s say that if Tommy did a great job at changing his image (donate to charities, do heroic works etc etc), people might (just might!) consider to accept him.

Right now it’s just appalling. No common sense.

calvin , who's also commenting on Pelopor's post, saw this political twist as a bitter comedy:

if people accept Tommy, it means Indonesians should be awarded with the “history amnesiac nation award”. I’m speechless even to think the possibility that guy could be accepted to society since he’s the reason of Soeharto’s fall of grace (and our nation as well). this is too pathetic that makes it funny.

Indonesian twitterers are also sharing their opinions regarding this matter:

Syafril Djaelani wondered what Golkar would become, if Tommy is chosen as chairman, which means that he could easily run as president in 2014 election. Syafril noted:

Tommy's emergence as candidate of Golkar's chairman is perceived differently by the people. Many are cynical and some are glad. Each perception differs depending on their personal agenda. The cynical ones think that Tommy isn't fit for chairmanship because of his personal track record. Imagine someone to lead a party, and that person was accused of murder, corruption and is a foul businessman. What would Golkar become to be chiefed by such man.

Syafril also added that being Golkar chairman means that Tommy will be eligible to become Indonesia's next president.

[…]

Alangkah sedihnya hatiku.

[…]

Tommy's candidacy to be Golkar's chairman is assumed to be his preparation to run as president in Indonesia's 2014 presidential election. If this signal is correct, than there are 2 Cendana-backed presidential candidates, Tommy Soeharto and Prabowo Subianto (read also my post about Indonesia's future leaders).

[…]

(It seems to me that) Indonesians (are wiling to) forget the crimes done by their leaders, as long as they are wealthy. My heart is saddened.

An article by Times magazine revealed that the favorite son of Indonesia's longest ruling president is worth US$ 800 million, including part ownership of an 18-hole golf course in Ascot, England. Back in the 1990s, Tommy held the majority ownership of the luxury Italian carmaker Lamborghini. Until May 2009, the BNP Paribas suspended his account in Guernsey which held some €36 million, that was opened under Garnet Investment Limited.

Last week media reported a shootout between the police and the group of Indonesia's most wanted terrorist, Noordin Mohammed Top. Indonesian netizens react to this issue.

On August 8th, Indonesian TV stations aired reports about shootout between Anti Terrorism Unit Densus 88, the police and a group of men, presumably Indonesia's most wanted terrorist Noordin Mohammed Top and his gang, in rural Central Java town Temanggung. Top is a Malaysian citizen believed to have orchestrated bombings in island resort Bali and the more recent Jakarta's dual bombings.

Top has been living nomadically around Java for years and has actively recruited suicide bombers, one of which was 18 year-old Dani Dwi Permana, who carried out an explosion last month at J.W. Marriott Jakarta. Dani believed that Islam is now in chaos and only Jihad can purify it.

A few days after the shootout, the media reported that the last-standing slain militant was not Noordin, it was Ibrohim, the former J.W Marriott who's also Noordin's sympathizer and the person who help smuggled explosive materials inside the five-star hotel.

Angry Infidel, the Tea and Politics blogger says:

Bad news: the dead man was a florist and an admirer/follower of Noordin […]

Noordin knows very well how to elude the police and has dedicated time to improve his net of supporters. They even think he is like a “pop star”, something which explain that some other guy offers himself to die in his place (and of course, the possible brainwashing as in the sects). His legend (and as a result, his admirers) and the possibility of making everyone who took part in Bali bombers’ trial of getting killed have grown these days: no prudent Govt. would have said anything about him being killed, if there was a possibility (even if it was remote) of him escaping the siege. Specially because Noording has escaped repeatedly in the past from the police. President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is the first man on Noordin’s “kill list” as we have seen now.

According to online news portal Detik, Ibrohim was groomed for an attack mission on the residence of President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono in Cikeas [id], West Java. The same Ibrohim, 36 year-old father of four, is also identified by JI expert as one of Noordin's sleeping army, which means that he could assimilate right back to the society soon after he fulfilled his assignment.

Blogger Patung posted maps of raids made by Anti Terrorism Unit 88 against Noordin Top's terror cell.

On Patung's post Parvita commented:

For one Noordin that died, there are hundreds of Noordin born. Noordin have spread his teachings. I was plainly amazed that the police managed to catch the person that will commit suicide bombing in August. I would really like to know what is in the suicide bombers mind.

Odinius also commented on Patung's post, saying:

Good bloody riddance. Unfortunately, the extremist pigs, the sheep who follow them, and the weasels who publicly defend them will likely continue to blame anyone and everyone else for the bombings. Any rational person, though, has to conclude that this has been a problem within Indonesian Islam, and had to be dealt with in large part by Indonesian Muslims. This is exactly what happened. Not to denigrate or marginalize the role of non-Muslims Indonesians, or the assistance of foreign governments in aiding Indonesia with intelligence and funding for Densus 88, but the government’s ability to politically go out and take these mutherf***kers out has more to do with the general sense of revulsion against the bombings and the perversion of Islam that they represent. This was not really present in the earlier bombings to the degree that it has been since July.

Via Twitter, citizens expressed their support and contentment of the police and Densus 88's accomplishment.

Carry on in maintaining alertness, as well as to stop and eliminate act of terror to its root, where ever they are, whoever they might be and regardless of their motivation.

Last Friday's dual blasts marked the end of six years of a peaceful and sound Indonesia. As the nation condemns the terror attacks, Indonesian youths show the spirit of nationalism online.

Many Indonesians are sending tweets like “We're not afraid” motto through #indonesiaunite, something that people wouldn't dare say bluntly, especially right after bombing incidents a few years ago. Thanks to microblogging sites, Indonesian youths are able to get out of their fear shells and express themselves and their opinion.

Spontaneously, many twitterers, followed by users of Plurk and Facebook modified their avatars and used the national red and white flag. Hashtag #indonesiaunite has become the most active trending on local Twitter (even as this article is being written).

[…]

Does this morale statement through social media has any influence? Of course!!

First of all, we as online citizens show ourselves in front of the international world, that we're against acts of terrorism. We won't be afraid of them. The work of the terrorist which (even from how they're called, we know what they're up about) to plant terror in our society is no longer effective. We can show them that their efforts to scare us and make us look vulnerable in front of the international world aren't effective.

Second, the international world will know about our fight. They can see it through trendings on Twitter and Facebook Page. Hopefully through these ways, (foreigners) won't be afraid to come to our country. They won't label our country as terrorist's lair. To help them understand, try to post in English, so they'll learn about our fight and our stance against terrorism.

Hopefully Indonesia United (movement) will really unite us, at least the online citizens. Hopefully our leaders will stop issuing pointless debates and arguments, and take our example. If the people can unite in one voice against this, why can't the leaders do the same thing?

Pandji and his peeps from the Jakarta Twitter User Group, posted a song on Youtube called “Kami Tidak Takut” (we're not afraid).

Rasanya tak pernah saya mendengar seorang garong yang menggarong rumahnya sendiri. Tapi telah menjadi sebuah deviasi ketika pengebom membom negerinya sendiri.

I don't think that I've ever heard a robber robbing his own house. But the statement becomes deviated once (we replace robber into) a bomber who bombed his own country.

[…] In the land of the Palestinians, after a bomb exploded, there'll be a party who openly claim responsible of an explosion of a certain bomb which happened in location ‘A' at a certain hour. While here, the (culprits) need to be pursued first, and do they admit their doing? Or blame the (Almighty) Creator, who send them to do what they did for such and such reasons?

If they trully hate a certain country, go there and (try) blow things there. Not in this land. Not in this country. They'll only shed the blood of their fellow countrymen. So, is that trully the whole point of the act?

Another terrorist act happened again in Indonesia. Two bombs hit Indonesian capital Jakarta on Friday. Witnesses said that the first explosion was heard at 07:40 AM coming from the JW Marriott, and two minutes after a second explosion ripped a restaurant of the Ritz Carlton Hotel, located about 500 meters from the first blast's point, filled with people who are attending breakfast meetings. Both luxurious hotels are known to be frequented by western foreigners.

Local sources said that the current blasts claimed nine lives and injured many Indonesians who work in both hotels.

It's still fresh in many Jakartans' memories how a suicide bomber set off a high explosive bomb in front JW Marriott hotel in 2003, which caused 14 fatalities and 156 injuries. The suicide bomber was accused to have a link with Jemaah Islamiyah (JI), a splinter group of Al Qaeda in South East Asia.

Twitterer Andre Siregar was staying at the Ritz when the blast occured, he said:

He also posted a picture taken from his room at the Ritz, and another picture taken not long after the blast.

Recently re-elected President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono said that the blasts were initiated by those who wish to see a post presidential election chaos, while Vice President Jusuf Kalla blamed the Police and Indonesian Intelligence Agency (BIN) for slacking and overly focused to secure the Presidential election but failed to secure other things.

Quoted by the local news portal [id] detik.com, Jusuf Kalla who's popularly known by his initial JK, said that until it's realized as an act, bombing requires plenty of preparations which take months, couldn't happen in a mere week.

BIN chief Syamsir Siregar, who's currently in the hot water admitted the agency's negligence, told Kompas [id] that they didn't pick up any clue that says that bomb blasts will be staged in Jakarta, he also add that this sort of national security breach can happen anywhere in the world even to superpower countries.

At the moment, hundreds of police and anti terrorism unit Densus 88 have been deployed to secure the premises and Jakarta is currently under Siaga 1 - highest security alert, which means that the police are still on hot pursuit of the culprits and searching if bomb threats remain imminent.

The US and Australian governments have condemned this act of terrorism and have pledged to help the Indonesian government.

Indonesia, the world's largest Muslim populated country, conducted its first ever presidential election debate. The country's three presidential hopefuls attended the debate. But many viewers and bloggers were disappointed with the debate.

Last Thursday June 18, 2009 some millions of Indonesian TV viewers fixed their eyes on their TV set for the nation's first ever presidential election debate. It was the only moment so far where the three Indonesian chief of state hopefuls — Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY), Megawati Sokarnoputri (Mega), and Jusuf Kalla (JK) are reunited all in one forum.

The citizens applauded the idea of the political show which was aired by several TV stations, but many booed the program's execution.

Online, bloggers are in unison saying that the debate was a full blown disappointment. Some believe that it was a key moment for the three candidates and their running mates, but unfortunately the candidates weren't seen to carry themselves well enough or to send out the proper messages that could increase their odds to become the president of the world's largest Muslim populated country.

Herman Saksono wrote an opinion about the debate in Politikana, an online community for politically-savvy Indonesians, saying that:

Eventhough I have no intention to review the content of the debate, but with all due respect I have no clue what to say about Mega. Her arguments are unclear, making us wondering whether the lady actually has a vision for this county.

SBY and JK were the winners of the night, despite their less than spectacular performances. SBY showed his capacities as a leader that oversee problems in macroscopic way, but he failed to show comprehension to solve the micro issues. JK on the other hand, knows so little about governance concepts, but he aced when it comes to the people's daily issues.

They're both are an ideal combination that compliments one another. But we all know that SBY-JK combination will not be smooth.

RJ Sulistyo wrote a post on Kompasiana, stating his disappointment about the highly anticipated debate.

Awalnya sangat ditunggu, tapi akhirnya mengecewakan. inilah komentar singkat tentang debat calon presiden putaran pertama tadi malam.

(The debate was) highly anticipated, but the result was disappointing. here are some short comment about the presidential candidates' first round of debate. Normative, lacking fresh ideas, monotonous and they didn't attack one another. Boring.

[…]

To have an interesting debate, first of all they need to have different perspectives. There won't be any debate if they all have the same perspective. When their visions are different, then they should start criticizing each other. This is crucial to see if the idea is based on (a good) argument or strong facts or not. This way we can test the intelligence and mentality of our future president.

On Indonesia's main weapon defense system (Alutsista) and Lapindo Mud flow (writer's note: read here for more info), Mega and JK didn't use these two issues to criticize SBY. If JK remained silent, we understood why, his position as Vice President in SBY's administration enables him to frontally criticize SBY's ideas. Mega had a huge opportunity to bring down SBY. The opportunity was not used well. That's why the debate was not at all exciting or even good in terms of quality.

[…]

We understand that the debate is a new tradition. The candidates are still hesitating to criticize frontally in front of an open forum. All these times they've been criticizing one another harshly but never face to face. In this position, I think everybody was a loser last night. In front of the person (they criticized), they're behaving nicely, but out there they criticize each other sharply.

Another Indonesian military helicopter crashed on Monday in Cianjur, West Java, raising concerns among Indonesians regarding the country's deteriorating Primary Defense Weapon System (Alutsista).

Last month, Indonesian president Susilo Bambang Yuhoyono (SBY) admitted [id] defense weapons procurement budget alleviation. However, he claimed that the government didn't cut the weapons maintenance budget.

Indonesia is currently having an unease bilateral relation with the neighbor country Malaysia over Ambalat. Both country claim ownership over the oil rich sea block situated in Celebes Sea which borders with Malaysian state Sabah.

Despite the agreement made by both governments to eliminate show of force, many believes that it's a crucial moment for Indonesia to defend its sovereignty.

A post appeared on Pemuda Indonesia baru blog questions the quality of Indonesian army:

Kembali Pesawat TNI jatuh padahal belum lama tragedi Hercules berlalu.

Once again a military air craft crashed, while the Hercules tragedy happened not so long ago. A Bolco type Helicopter belongs to the Indonesian Army, the helicopter took three civilians and two crew members. The craft crashed in Pagelaran Village, South Cianjur, West Java.

[…]

The unfortunate event makes us wondering, how strong is our Military? This question arise in the midst of a crucial event when the army is supposed to be able to show its strength. Our neigboring country is ardently showing its military force (Show of Force) in Ambalat.

[…]

According to one people's representatives, Indonesian military force is still above Malaysia's, however his assesment was based on quantity, where (it's a fact that) our personnel and weapons are bigger in number compared to those belong to Malaysian Army But what about the quality?

The Army's plane crash that happened a few times lately could raised question regarding the quality of the Indonesian Army. Indeed we win in terms of quantity, (but) our quality is questionable.

Dwi Eka wrote a post on Think and Act for National Defense, not long after the crash of Lockheed C-130H in East Java last month, which killed 101 passengers and army members. She stated that Primary Defense Weapon System has been a serious topic within the government, and since 2007 the Indonesian military (TNI) experienced budget cut that made them struggle to maintain the Alutsista.

The TNI (Indonesian National Army) is the lance of national defense, and national defense determines the state's sovereignty.

[…]

We can assume that Alutsista problem was not caused by limited budget, but also because the budget's absorption is low. The use of the available budget, which is included on the national budget, is off target or leaked. The Fee system influences the quality of the (purchasing) projects. No wonder if some wants to see audit within the Indonesian Military. The audit is, of course, a good intention, not at all a way to deflate the TNI but on the contrary, with a transparent and measured Alutsista's procurement and maintenance system the people are hoping that the TNI will absorp as many available budget as possible in order to enhance our national defence. The audit aims to see how well the military use the budget, so we can look for solution if there's any sort of (budget) divergence.

Moreover, to increase the absorption of the budget, each individual needs to be honest, sincere, professional, and sets out the morality aspect because we're fighting for the country's honor and dignity.

On the next level, we need to seriously reassess the recruitment system, increasing the education (and training) standard of our soldiers by emphasizing on profesionalism instead of material compensation, and refilling the abandoned posts, like enhancing our border strength and maintenance of the state assets and also combat capacity of the TNI's personnels.

This efforts hopefully could increase a well targeted budget's absorption. With this the public will understand and allow their money to be invested for the defense sector.

Speaking to a local journal, Air Vice Marshall Sagom Tamboen said [id] that openly speaking about national defense and main defense weapon system could endanger Indonesia and the civilian population.

In Indonesia, homeland security and defense information is classified, according to the state law.

Next July, Indonesians will head to the ballots to choose the next RI 1 (Republik Indonesia 1 - head of state). The Alutsista matter is fast becoming the favorite agenda for the three hopefuls, each of them claim to increase the procurement budgets if they're elected.

The case of Prita Mulyasari, a mother of two, is currently the hot topic among Indonesian bloggers. She wrote an online complaint letter [id] against a private hospital in Tangerang, one of Jakarta's suburban areas, and now she is being charged for violating chapter 27 verse 3 of the Information and Electronic Transaction Law (UU ITE) [id].

Prita shared her experience of being maltreated by the hospital on a mailing-list. The hospital took legal action against her. That online complaint may result into six years jail term and maximum fine of 1 billion Rupiah (nearly US$ 98,000).

Erwin Mulyadi shared his opinion on his blog, saying:

It feels like going back in the past, the freedom of speech soon will become a luxury in the country. Taking a wrong step, we could be strangled by “defamation” chapter according to the ITE law for things we talk about over the internet.[…]

This unfortunate event saddens me; I personally hope that any service (including hospitals) should aim to have customers satisfaction. All criticism (whether presented subjectively or written in anger, which therefore didn't follow rules on writing's decency) that caused the writer to be put in jail surely saddens us, who often write in the virtual world and bloggers who are considered as citizen journalists who are aware so much about “freedom of speech”. Let say that Prita, who's said to lie, don't you think that the (legal) response is a bit too much? We can all imagine the psychological effect of the case for writers who are critical in “making things right” and we can imagine how easy criticism is being labeled as “defamation”.

A post on daily social network says:

Demokrasi? Sungguh menyedihkan.

It's unfortunate indeed when you're complaining on internet, you ended up in jail. While each day we see a column filled with public complaints against companies, but I've never heard someone being arrested for (having his complaint letter printed on newspaper). Maybe we should complain through newspapers and not complain online? There was indeed a complaint letter source being jailed, but after we really read about it the complaint was first written online (anonymously). This is an interesting case that shows that Indonesians can't bare criticism, even from customers who are considered kings. If you have any complaint, printed directly on newspapers, don't go around the Internet. Your printed complaint will be gain attention, even solution, while the online one will take you to jail.

Is this freedom of expression? Democracy? How pathetic.

Commission for Human Rights' (KOMNAS HAM) official said[id] that the court is overreacting to use an ITE law to sue a consumer, the commission also said that they're ready to facilitate the victim's family for justice.

Meanwhile, Indonesian Internet users are taking the public advocacy to the country's latest favorite networking site Facebook.

This case came under the spotlight after the Indonesian Supreme Court acquitted the plea for ITE's reassessment.

Another court session for Prita is set for next week.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono is set to announce the Central Bank chief Boediono as his running mate in a couple of days. Indonesians are divided over the candidacy of Boediono. Some cheered at the decision, but the president's decision is unpopular among some parties.

Indonesian President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono (SBY) is set to announce the Central Bank chief Boediono as his running mate in a couple of days.

Indonesians are divided with the candidacy of Boediono. Some cheered at the decision, but the president's decision is unpopular among some parties who priorly bid coalition with Yudhoyono's Democratic Party (Partai Demokrat - PD [id]).

Ahead of the presidential election, four parties, namely the National Mandate Party (PAN), Prosperous Justice Party (PKS), United Development Party (PPP), and the National Awakening Party (PKB) are preparing to have coalition with PD. The plan is now in jeapordy, as parties' officials threatened to pull out from the coalition if SBY goes ahead confirming Boediono's candidacy.

Speaking to local English newspaper the Jakarta Post, PD deputy chairman Andi Mallarangeng said that since the begining, coalition parties had agreed to practice his executive right to choose his VP.

Former Chief Presidential Spokesman Wimar Witoelar, on his Perspektif blog said that Boediono's candidacy could be a sign that the country is actually reforming its political system.

The choice of Boediono as vice presidential candidate on the SBY ticket could awaken middle-class moderates to the fact that they are a real factor in the direction of the nation. […] The results of the parliamentary elections allay fears of fundamentalism as the secular parties outnumber the sectarian by a wide margin.

[…]

The nice thing about political predictions is that you do not have to argue against them. If you don’t like pessimistic outlooks, just make sure they do not come true. Otherwise they become self-fulfilling prophecies.

[…]

Although Indonesian voters time and again vote for secular parties, the PKS keeps inching forward while Golkar and PDIP keep receding. My own thoughts are more optimistic..The choice of Boediono as vice presidential candidate may be seen as a signal that SBY is closing ranks with the secularists. Remember that while SBY-JK has been weak against the anti-pornography bill and other pet issues of the Islamist right, PDIP has been strong and consistent in defense of pluralism and secularism.

[…]

The choice of a non-party clean person will help strengthen the true base against sectarianism, the middle class moderates.

Arya, wrote a posting on Politikana, one of Indonesian political platforms, saying that as non-partisan, Boediono has a strategic meaning to PD. He elaborates [id]:

Hnah!

Boediono's status as a non-partisan (at least for now) has a strategic meaning for PD. So later on, no party could claim the hard work of 2009-2014 administration as their own.

As we all know, an incumbent's position has a big influence when someone or a party submit itself to the next election. With all this benefits, an incumbent is already one or two steps ahead of his “outsider” (party member) rivals.

Can you imagine if the new SBY's VP is either Nur Wahid or Hatta Rajasa? What would happen is that PKS and PAN will easily claim SBY's work as if it was their own and this could be their strong points in selling their agendas for the 2014 presidential election.

What we can expect to happen in the future, (is that) the non-partisan Boediono, could convert into PD party member. Voila!

Blogger Fawwaz Akmal feels that SBY and PD's fear is absurd. Fawwaz argues that in 2014 SBY can't be re-elected for the third time, and he's also sure that the global economic downturn is the main reason why Boediono was chosen to be the running mate. Fawwaz says:

As far as I know, Boediono is a macroeconomics expert, who knows little about the real economic concern in Indonesia. In fact, many Indonesian and international economic experts have said that the way to protect the country from the global economic crisis, a country needs to strengthen its Real economy, (which means) the microeconomics.

Facebooker Andy Armansyah wonders who fit to be the people's president and vice president, he says:

Tempointeraktif News said the Market gives a positive response to SBY-Boediono duo, this means that (SBY) is the market's president then.. (the fact is that) the market is ruled by wealthy minority, so who are the people's president-vice president candidates.. you????

Indonesia holds multi-party system. In 2004, Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono became Indonesia's first directly elected president.
Recently the US Trade Representative placed Indonesia in a Priority Watch List of countries where Intellectual Property Rights violations are rampant. The slipping of Indonesia's status from Watch List to Priority Black List is considered a slap on the face by Indonesian officials. Indonesia bloggers react on the issue.

Recently, the US Trade Representative (USTR) released its annnual Special 301, an analysis on US trading partners' seriousness to reassert the Intellectual Property Rights (IPR) within their respective judicial soils.

Despite government's effort to crackdown IPR hijacking activities, the USTR placed Indonesia in Priority Watch List, alongside IPR violator heavy weights such as China and Russia.

The slipping of Indonesia's status from Watch List to Priority Black List was considered a slap on the face by Indonesian officials.

Quoted by The Jakarta Globe through Trade Minister Mari Elka Pangestu, the state said it is concerned for Indonesia's downranking.

From time to time, the national police destroys massive amount of pirated CDs in public and this is paraded by the local media.

In the capital Jakarta, pirated DVDs and CDs are omnipresent. The “sidewalk retailers” can be found every 50 meters in popular hangouts in Central and West Jakarta.

William on his blog Etersoul agrees that Indonesia should remain on the blacklist.

Lalu bagaimana tanggapanku sendiri?

What a shame.

What's my opinion? I'd say out loud (that I) AGREE!! Why I said that? The reality says that Indonesians don't really respect other people's work, (the reason) could be because they're poor in terms of creativity, or wish to make headway in an instance. But honestly, I don't really believe that (Indonesians are) poor in terms of creativity, because the truth of the matter is that there are plenty of citizens who brought positive highlights over the country.

[…]

Despite the police's effort to tackle piracy of medicines, DVD, and even as their effort branched out to the virtual world where they try to stop online article plagiarizers, their work will not be effective as long as they put in their mind (how to benefit themselves with) the easiest ways possible. What a shame.

Creativesimo, a local community blog, speaks about the irony of this downranking:

Selamat buat Indonesia! Setelah merilis undang-undang informasi dan transaksi elektronik menyusul undang-undang hak atas kekayaan intelektual, lalu disusul beberapa penggrebekan sporadis - baik sekadar proyek ataupun serius - Indonesia mendapat ganjaran. Peringkatnya naik dalam daftar hitam pembajakan software, kalo dulu Watch List sekarang Priority Watch List. Huebat!

Congratulations to Indonesia! After releasing its first Information and Electronic Transaction Law which follows the Intellectual Property Rights Law, and also sporadic crackdowns - without detailing if the crackdowns were just “projects” or the government was actually serious - Indonesia is now punished. Its ranking plunges from Watch List to Priority Watch List. Awesome!

Indonesia is now on the same class with Russia and China in terms of intellectual rights violation. But: do we have the same IT achievements like them? Obviously we're left way behind! So why are we fighting the (IPR) violations instead of fighting the lack of education or our (education) lag?

Government's willingness to eradicate IPR piracy is shown with the establishement of Directorate General of Intellectual Property Rights under the Ministry of Justice and Human Rights, Republic Of Indonesia. However, the police's knowledge to detect illegal softwares is still poor [id].

This May mark the launch of Indonesia's first Intellectual Property Academy. The school, which located in in Depok, West Java, is founded in collaboration with the Japanese government, through Japanese International Cooperation Agency (JICA).
