Since January 18 2012, former president Marc Ravalomanana has announced that he would return to Madagascar soon after being in exile in South Africa for three years. On January 21, the capital city anxiously anticipated his return as thousands gathred on the roads leading to the airport waiting for the plane to land. However, a few minutes after the plane entered the Malagasy airspace, the plane was told to divert from its route and land in a different city. Malagasy citizens reacted in real time to the tumultuous event.

Tropical storm Binziga has just hit Madagascar, having killed killed six people and leaving about 7,500 without adequate shelter. Yet the attention is focused on the attempted return of the Ousted Madagascar President Marc Ravalomanana, who issued a statement and spoke at a news conference in Johannesburg stating that he will return from his exile in South Africa.

As coup attempts are seemingly becoming a yearly feature in Madagascar, twitter updates from local citizens kept track of the development of yet another mutiny by army officers, a few of them of ready involved in the successful coup of 2009. Avylavitra compiles a series of tweets that described over a couple of days the progression of the failed takeover.
