Bangladeshi Blogger Writes About Prison Experience

Categories: South Asia, Bangladesh, Citizen Media, Freedom of Speech, Religion

Bangladeshi Blogger and activist Asif Mohiuddin, the winner of the best social activism blog [1] from the Deutsche Welle Best Of Blogs Awards 2012, was arrested last April [2] on charges of “hurting religious sentiment of Muslims through writing”. He has been released under bail and is now writing about his experiences in confinement in Guruchandali blogging platform [3] [bn] from West Bengal, India:

They took me to cell no. 14. As soon as I entered, shouts and screams were heard from everywhere. Inmates started making noise with their tin plates. They started shouting slogans “we want atheist free prison”, “we want death penulty for atheists”, “we wont tolerate atheists in the prison” etc.

From rapists, murderers to drug dealers, there are many convicted persons in the prison. They committed many crimes and the convicted were here before, they are here now and will also be in the future. But in the whole prison there is no place for four accused atheists.

It may be mentioned here that Asif Mohiuddin was actively involved in Bangladesh's #Shahbag Protests [4] demanding capital punishment for war crimes committed during Bangladesh's liberation from Pakistan in 1971 and banning of religious political parties.
