Young and Old United in Nicaragua's #OcupaINSS Movement

Nicaragua's youth began using the hashtag #OcupaINSS [es] to show their solidarity with the senior citizens that were protesting to demand partial pensions from the government. Blogger Mildred Largaespada of 1001 Trópicos [es] explains what happened:

And now the action movie begins: The senior citizens occupy the [Nicaraguan Social Security Institute (INSS)] building and the president sends the police to evict them. A group of young people feel sympathy for the seniors and think that if they go [to the occupied building] to show their support, they won't get kicked out. This is how this all started, which ended up unleashing the fury of [President] Ortega […] and in the dark, at night, using the paramilitary and with the complicity of Nicaragua's chief of police, used the state's violent repression to evict the young and old.

She adds:

But, Ortega says that none of this happened. And he wants to believe that people are going to believe him because this was not reported through his media outlets. But…oh, Daniel Ortega, wake up! it was reported through new media, social networks, and now the whole world knows.

Mildred goes on to quote citizen media and share how she joined this movement through Twitter.
