Art Quake in Kerala – The Kochi-Muziris Biennale

Ever since the first public display of an abstract art painting by Czech painter Frantisek Kupka in 1912 to the era of Damien Hirst(s) and Andy Warhol(s) commercialization and mass production of art, contemporary art world has set new blazing routes exploding into the senses of both the art lover and the laywomen influencing and stretching the limits of her aesthetic and intellectual senses.

Determined to secure a prominent place in art history, a tiny state in southern India has opened herself up to the world of contemporary art hosting a three month long Biennale festival, India’s first, from 12/12/12. The sleepy suburbs of Fort Kochi in Kerala is witnessing an explosion of contemporary art through various mediums including graffiti, installation, painting, music, films, sculpture, and performance art by Indian and international artists. The three month long festival encompasses talks, seminars, screenings, and workshops.

Kochi Muziris Biennale LogoArtists from forty countries are participating in the Biennale, the list include Subodh Gupta, Ariel Hassan of Argentina, Ai Weiwei of China, Ernesto Neto of Brazil to name a few. Kochi-Muziris Biennale is curated by India’s two famous artists Bose Krishnamachari and Riyas Komu, incidentally from Kerala.

As with many first time ventures, controversy courting, debate loving Keralites in Social Media are involved in discussions about the pros and cons including the controversy surrounding the allocation of state funds for the Biennale.

UN on his blog elaborates on the necessities of Biennale:

In Europe and other countries, art has been popularized and revolutionized through graffiti, street art etc. The constant conversations and interchange through art in public spaces has given an outlet to active public discourse, protests and opinions and forms a cultural space amidst the general populace. Thus art seeps into the sensibilities of a street vendor to a blue collar worker.

Chandran TV in a lengthy blog post questions the crass commercialization behind such festivals and art in general:

Through an array of colorful and strange displays termed as art, the state government uses Kochi Muziris Biennale to enchant the laymen and hence create a safe space in the tourism map. As a result, just like ice breaks into water, the people behind the scheme thinks Kerala’s art culture will develop and thrive. Such kind of commercial short visions have gone amuck in many other countries. If the intentions are to really showcase and elevate Kerala’s art space, then one need to follow France’s Marseille, Spain’s Bilbao or England’s Liverpool. Nothing of that sort has even been envisioned in Kerala's Biennale

Riya Ad asks on his Google Plus space:

Is the Kochi Muziris Biennale really for the public? Until now no such thing has been done by the state to explain the finesse or the complexities of any kind of art to the public, then why suddenly this Biennale is conducted? Is it really for us?

Another active blogger Niraksharan (Manoj Ravindran) espouses the necessity of such events:

There might be a lot of controversies surrounding this Biennale. But, we need to keep them aside for three months and each of us, every Indian or artist has the right to enjoy this art spectacle. Even if the controversies are true, the state government has spend millions on this collecting from our taxes and hence for every paisa of the tax, we would need to take advantage of this art spectacle.

Amidst all the conversations, the daily pictures from the Biennale represents school kids and youngsters actively involved in enjoying the displayed installations and graffiti, thus depicting that a different world of sensibility has opened up for them.
