Russia: DDoS Attacks Cripple Opposition's Online Vote

Categories: Eastern & Central Europe, Russia, Elections, Politics, Protest, Technology, RuNet Echo

Eight hours after online voting for the Russian opposition's “Coordinating Council” began, unknown assailants launched a sustained Denial-of-Service attack against the Election Commission's website [1], disabling the primary voting portal. Candidates and bloggers Alexey Navalny [2] [ru] and Vladislav Naganov [3] [ru] were quick to accuse the Kremlin of financing the assault, though they assure voters that the election site will be restored soon. Commissioner Leonid Volkov accepted responsibility for being underprepared for the attack, but reminded the public that the opposition faces a powerful foe [4] [ru] in the government.
