Peru: October 3, Municipal Election Day

Election day in Lima is usually characterized by large numbers of people in the streets, especially around 4pm, usually the time when the polling stations are closed. As in many other things, Limeans practice their vote at the last minute… but the event usually starts early that day. The polling station workers (ONPE [es]) usually stay late into the night at the stations, as do the army and police that guard them. These workers in theory should arrive early to prepare the voting materials and areas, work for which they have been trained, but in practice, this doesn’t happen. For example, some Twitter users passionately protested until yesterday’s early hours.
