Window on Eurasia reports that “there appears to be a chance that Turkey, despite denials by its officials, might break the embargo against recognition [of Abkhazia] because of Ankara’s desire to play a greater role in the Caucasus region, its own long-standing experience as the only country to recognize the Turkish Republic of North Cyprus, and the influence of its own Abkhaz and Circassian communities.”

  • I think US and EU pressure on Turkey would be substantial in this regard.

Perhaps low-level contacts, but I don’t see recognition happening for the above reason.

  • dfr

they are to regognise very soon

  • I don’t see anything wrong with the Country of Abkhazia. USA can’t have it both ways – force breakup of Serbia and create Kosovo, then turn around and say that Abkhazia, which has NEVER (past 1200 years) wanted to be part of Georgia, should be forced to remain under Shaakashvili’s rule.
