Egypt: Limited Internet is Unlimited Backwardness

In a previous post, Tarek Amr captured the initial reactions to TE-Data's fair usage policy (FUP) , followed by more adverse reactions hitting the Egyptian blogosphere. Then the Egyptian Ministry of Communications and Information Technology changes its mind.
Several videos were created and posted to mock the FUP decision; Ashraf Hamdy wrote ET Data … destroy your life and Adham posted a Hitler dubbed video against the unfair decision.
ElLeithy wrote a post celebrating the victory of internet users:
استجابة للمطلب الجماهيري برفض قرار سابق حول تحديد الانترنت في مصر، قرر وزير الاتصالات الدكتور طارق كامل بابقاء جميع العقود الحالية لمشتركى الانترنت سارية بدون تعديل وأن نظام الانترنت الجديد “سياسة الاستخدام العادل” استرشادى لمدة شهرين للمشتركين الجدد فقط .
Giving in to public demand and internet users’ objection to the Fair Usage Policy, Dr. Tarek Kamel, Minister of Communications and Information Technology announced that the FUP does not apply to current user contracts and agreements. New subscribers will experiment with the policy for two months to give the government an indicator of how surfers use the net.
Tarek Ez Alden reported a demonstration that took place on August 13:
وكان عدد من مشتركي الانترنت في مصر قد نظموا وقفة احتجاجية الخميس في القاهرة عبروا عن رفضهم للسياسة الجديدة للانترنت.
وكان الاقتراح يقضي بوضع حد معين لمشترك الانترنت من التحميل “download” خلال الشهر الواحد، وإذا تجاوز هذا الحد تقوم الشركة تلقائيا بتخفيض السرعة خلال ما تبقى من أيام الشهر.
ورفع المحتجون خلال وقفتهم أمام مقر إحدى الشركات المزودة للخدمة لافتات حملت شعارات “الداونلود مضر بالصحة.. وقد يؤدي إلى الوفاة” ، “ليه تزنق نفسك.. إحنا إللي حنزنقك بمعرفتنا”، “الانترنت المحدود = تخلف بلا حدود.”

A big number of internet users in Egypt organized a demonstration objecting to the new policy that limits their downloads. During their strike, they held banners carrying a variety of slogans: “Downloads is bad for your health .. Downloads can kill you!”, “Why limit yourself … we will find ways to limit you”, and “Limited internet is unlimited backwardness.”
