Korea: Things that might surprise you in North America

Categories: East Asia, North America, South Korea, U.S.A., Humor, Ideas

A netizen shows an interesting post [1] about 22 things that surprise you while you travel America. It is fun to see how things are natural in a place could be observed as interesting by others.

1. highway traffic lane.
There are parts that are bulged out between white lanes as you can see above.[…] At first, I was wondering what it was… the local said that “It is good when you are sleepy while you drive… If your car is on the lane, there will be noisy sound.. you wake up due to the sound and vibration.” Listening to that, I was surprised. It must be pricy to install those parts, but I could see one side of the developed countries.

2. Korean automobiles
After arriving at the airport, I moved around with a rented car. If you are a first visitor of North America, you can often see Korean automobiles and must feel glad to see them. However, the majority is Japanese automobiles. Recetly the American automobile sector is in trouble and there must be more Japanese automobiles therefore.

3. Twins Motocycles
[…]It is surprising to see two motocycles in a lane.

4. Motocycle Group – Hippies? You can often find that there are motocycle groups if you have long distance trips. Unconsciously, it reminds a little bit of scary images in movies. So, you’re surprised and nervous. But they’re not dangerous.[…]

5. Hitchhikers.
It is impossible to have basic life without a car in America. Maybe that’s why. Sometimes, there are hitchhikers in highways or roads. Sometimes when your car doesn’t move, they come and knock the window. I was scared at first and didn’t give them a ride. If you experience that, you must be nervous too. When I asked local friends, there are many people who don’t give a ride either. We don’t see hitchhikers in Korea.

6. Bear and dear
I often see road kill in others’ posts on the Internet. I saw arguments between netizens if you run into animals you should just keep driving or should not. Sudden appearance of animals and sudden stopping of cars can lead to accidents. Maybe we should drive carefully and that would be the correct answer. Here you can often see board signs that warn places where animals walk around a lot. I also came across a deer and it was such a big one. The locals said that if the car hit those deer or bear, the car will be crushed due to their big sizes. When you see those signs, you should drive carefully.

7.Head lights on a cloudy day.
If there is a slight rainning, people here all turn car lights on like they promised. If it is a little bit cloudy, they also turn the lights on right away. When I saw it at first, I thought that there was a sudden emergency, such as war.

8. Celluar phone
Since the danger of electromagnatic waves has been talked about, this scene like the photo is shown in TV sometimes. Like the photo, they receive the phone with a distance from their ears and talk to the phone looking at it. It seems that they’re really sensitive to their health.

9. Kissing couple.
I often see this kind of scene in California where I live. I remember a Korean TV program, Misooda (talkshow with female foreigners in Korea). Those participants said that they were all so shocked when they saw Korean girls go to restrooms together, and walk arm is arm with together or holding their hands together. To us, it is freiendship. But when I see these actings in here, I am a little bit stepping back.[…]

10. No accompaniment of alcohol. We all know about this. But when you go out for drinking and see there are no side dishes, you are a little bit shocked. Not just because of that fact, you are more surprised that they don’t drink in weekdays and go back home right away after working hours.

11. Women’s smoking
[…] We also don’t talk about women’s smoking anymore. But there are a few brave women who smoke in the front gate of their companies or in places where many people are.

12. Friday party in a working place
About this, I was surprised and was jealous as wel. Friday evening, before the beginning of the weekend, companies have snack parties. Of course, there are some companies that don’t have them. But most companies have Friday parties. You worked hard for a week and so enjoy yourself with food and drinks… There are so many kinds of snacks and drinks, like you can see the above photo. Instead, they don’t have dining occassions that we have…^^

ㅋㅋ 그러면서..”so cold..”

13. If there is wind, there are leather coats.
California’s weather is dry and has nice days for 12 months. In contrast with Korea having hot and cold weather, it is always warm. Sometimes, the temperature goes down a little bit. If it is windy and cold a little bit, as all people promised, they wear leather coats or jackets…^^ Then they say “so cold…” and shrink their bodies. At first I was surprised the leather clothes were too much.

14. Spitting and Jaywalking
We learned that Americans are following traffic orders and laws well. That’s what I thought…^^^^^^^
Once I saw a man who looks normal spit his saliva on the street, threw his gum out, and jaywalk even though it was a red light.[…]

15.Calculating calories at grocery stores.
You can often see this at grocery stores.[…] When people go shopping-I don’t think that everyone does-, they check calories of products they buy. Some of them seem to use calculators and sum up them together. It seems that they compare them with daily calories.[…]

16. One sip?
Right next to a drinking water fountain, for a sip, we have paper cup like the left side. I saw there was a different kind written ‘sip’ in America (in the middle of the photo). It is smaller than our common paper cup. It is rather big to be one sip.

17. King Size
My body size is big enough and so I can have a king size on the menu at Burger King in Korea. But, in America, Burger King has much bigger King size menu. The difference would be like the photo. In my life, I always ate my hamburger up. But, I even couldn’t finish it. Pizza is also same.

18. Shooting Club
I heard that American friends usually bring their Korean friends here. It is the place where you can shoot as much as you can. When my friends asked me to go shooting, I thought that they were talking about shooting game at a game bar. But it was a real shooting place.[…]

19. BIg house and a little furniture
I always feel whenever I visit houses here, they are surprisingly big and wide. Compared to the family numbers, it is comparatively big and most of them are two story houses.[…] In the big house, there is not much furniture. There are walls everywhere and several closets and shelves. I feel so empty. And the house is shockingly cheap compared to Korea. You will be surprised with the price.[…]

24. Cultural difference about exposing the bosom. In North America and some countries in Europe, exposing the bosom is shockingly natural compared to Korea. Of course, there are various views. Rather than being regarded as shame and embarrassment, people here think it as self-expression or confidence. When we see this part, it seems that they are more liberal than Korea. But we shouldn’t think that due to this they are more liberal than us about sex culture. There are much more conservative families than ours.

25. Casual clothes, no make up, and bare skin….[…]Most of them don’t wear suits. Men usually wear shirts or T-shirts… or jeans or casual pants… Women also just wear casual clothes. I am surprised that they are mostly not doing make-up.

26. It takes too much time to commute between home and company, then giving up the company? It was among the conversation with the local. “I moved house… it is far away from the company… I’m thinking about another company.” We move several times, but don’t think about moving to a new company so much… So there are even weekend couples (who have jobs in different places and meet each other in the weekend).
