Buddhist Master Hsing Yun created controversy at an international Buddhist conference when he claimed, “There are no Taiwanese in Taiwan and Taiwanese are all Chinese.” Taiwan blogs The View from Taiwan and Letters from Taiwan both write about how Buddhism is being used for political purposes.

The Master is absolutely correct in his statement about “there is no taiwanese in taiwan, they are all Chinese that emmigrated there earlier”
Their forefather and parents all came from China Mainland.
To drive a wedge between them is for pure political purpose.
Hsing Yun’ comments definitely right but he likewise definitely will be misundstood by many and harnessed by some Taiwanese politicians who usually try very often to provoke hatreness among Taiwanese people.
Bill and Jack, you might like to refer to Melissa Brown’s seminal work Is Taiwan Chinese? Brown shows that identity is based on social experience rather than culture and ancestry.
Multiple opinion polls show that since the early nineties people in Taiwan have increasingly identified themselves as Taiwanese not Chinese. An opinion poll conducted by TVBS in March 2009 said 72% identified as Taiwanese and 16% as Chinese.
The terms “Chinese” and “Taiwanese” are not mutually exclusive. The people who choose to identify themselves as “Taiwanese” do not mean they are not “Chinese.” If we take a similar survey in Texas and ask people if they identify as “Texan” or “American,” we may find that more people identify themselves as “Texan” rather than “American.”
If what Hsing Yun said was correct, then there are no Americans in the U.S. either. Most Americans’ ancestors came from England, therefore according to Hsing Yun’s logic Americans are Englishmen.
Once again, it looks like the actual indigenous peoples of Taiwan are left out of the equation.
A bit racist, eh?
Very much like the Indians and Mexican who were rightfully here to begin with. HAVE THEIR RIGHTS BEEN UPHELD ? WHO IS FIGHTING FOR THEM ?
How sad we are, living in this kind of world now.
