It's worth noting that, not surprisingly, those xenophobs are amongst the most ignorant people in our society. A football match is not precisely a gathering of intellectuals, and these are the places where all kinds of violent and stupid people go to discharge their frustrations. Why on earth would someone go to a place willing to beat another one to death just because he is a supported of a rival team?
This has nothing to do with sports, it has more intrinsic and deeper roots. Argentine lower classes have a distinctive characteristic compared to their neighbours: they were tought and encouraged to behave with anger and envy against anyone. It's a national characteristic, is in our idiosyncrasy. We always blame others for our infortune, we are a failed nation because of imperialism or by the envy of european powers that want to steal our wealth. We are the poor innocent indians who were conned by the conquerors by selling us colorful collars. But when comparing ourelves to our neighbours, they are the indians, not us! Racism is a stupidity in a place where almost everybody comes from somewhere else, and most have indian blood although they may not show up in our traces.
