Sonia,

I agree with your fundamental point that China should be more self-critical and not make any claims of World leadership by institutionalizing blame as our basis for growth. However, I have to point out that there is no way for China to be a global partner in development as you advocated. Furthermore, as overseas Chinese, we must remember that living in a foreign land is our own choosing and take the risk of retribution should the feelings of the host country become suddenly anti-Chinese for any reason.

No nation, most obvious being the US, has not made their claim to a World power without following a independent policy for growth that does not take into consideration the sovereignty of other countries. In the case of the US, it is not that the US wanted to hoard all the resources for themselves, but in their quest for dominance, they could not allow any other nation dictate to them how much they were going to have.

Hence, if the above be the standard case for any nation, then China must follow its own resource, economic, and military strategy. Ultimately, we must all take note that countries who become global leaders do so by force. There is no cookbook on how a nation can be a responsible World power and there never will.

To Joe Zeid,

Although I applaud your honesty that there are some in the West who have nothing positive to say about China, I would like to respond to your initial comments about the authors of Unhappy China.

You say that Unhappy China spreads hatred at a wrong time when relations with the WEST is getting better. How do you define getting better? For example, the US currently gives and sells weapons to China's enemies, surrounds China with its military bases for China's own protection, and generally supports most of China's political activists.

Second, how can you be one who supports better ties between China and the West when you indirectly threaten free-speech, albeit, anti-West speech, by advocating sanctions to China if any publication that comes our from China so happens to be in anti-West in nature?

If anything, Unhappy China should be viewed by the West as illustrating that China does have issues it finds unacceptable and that future relations could be improved if the West tries to address those issues in its future dealings with China.

Evils of cultural revolution is blamed on gang of four. Unrest in Tibet is blamed on Dalai clique and now economic recession in China is blamed to the evil west.
When can China begin to be self critical, have faith in its great civilization, hardworking people, be a global partner in development, stop demonizing Dali Lama without having ever seen him.
If China actually wants to lead, it must develop leadership quality of reaching out and not blaming others and creating more enemies. Think of the millions of Chinese who live in the west. Why do some intellectuals ( may be with the sanction of the state) wants to make their life in the west uncomfortable by creating uneasy feelings amongst the people.

Wow, what a joke. Thank god it seems most of China thinks it's a joke too. Why the hell would you spread such stupid hatred at a time when the country's relations with the west are getting better?

Do these morons not understand all the west needs to do is put up some trade sanctions to shut down the economy and the country is in serious trouble?

Sadly, we have such morons in the west too who would write the same crap.
