Thanks for informing me of the etymology behind Shenyang. But my comment still holds true. In the post it was written “Shenyang, literally meaning ‘the city to the north of Shen River’…”. “Literal” derives from “litteralis” in Latin, which refers to the “letter” itself, no the history behind the letter.

The literal translation of Shenyang is not “the city to the north of Shen River”. No direction is intended in the coupling of the characters “Shen” and “yang”. It would have been named “Shenbei” if the literal translation were to stay.
