he entire world, including the film industry expressed initial shock, swiftly followed by outrage and denial when the review was made public in a British newspaper today. Several death threats have since been made to the anonymous reviewer who has had to go into hiding. ‘It’s absolutely disgraceful,’ said Daily Mail columnist Richard Littlejohn. ‘Everyone knows it’s the best film ever made, even if it is about Indians though at least it was directed by a British man, even if he is Scottish.’

The review described the film as ‘overblown’, ‘overhyped’ and ‘ridiculous’ and was published anonymously due fears of a huge public backlash. The film, by Trainspotting director Danny Boyle, was released earlier this year to slavish and near universal acclaim.

‘I normally only watch films with car chases, explosions and Angelina Jolie in, but Slumdog Millionaire was the best film I’ve ever seen!’ wept an overwhelmed film-goer just moments after leaving the cinema supported by his girlfriend. ‘I’ve never seen Steve cry at a film before, even when that guy didn’t kill the little girl in Con Air.’

The government is now being called upon to ban any further bad reviews of Slumdog Millionaire and censor publications which may contain negative comments about the film. A spokesman for the BNP has condemned the move, saying that it will ruin their cinema review page.

Those who are opposed to this movie surely miss the point of its critical acclaim. In the West, we use art forms like cinema to demonstrate common human conditions - whether its hope or despair, triumph over trying circumstances, love - these are feelings shared by all humans no matter race, ethnicity, culture, land - this movie was not meant to insult anyone but rather a way to find commonality among all peoples. One of the reason the West is so far ahead of poor developing countries is its willingness to look at itself critically. Consider all of the movies made that depicted the less beautiful side of people and cultures in the West. It only served to create awareness and elevate all humans. The West knows that Bollywood is just fiction in the same way that Hollywood musicals are fiction. Look at yourselves - the good and the bad side - that is the only way to better yourselves.

Danny Boyle stands a feet taller than all the rest of the movie makers this Oscar season. No matter how much people want to shred the movie, its meaning, its political 'incorrectness' it won't affect Danny, because primarily he has achieved the goal for a film maker- for all the dialogue that it has generated. Slumdog wasn't pretentious. I have seen Indian movies made about the slums, but none of them were as intimate as this movie.

People are not ok with "slumdog" but ok with the tag "gali ka kutta'? Thank God Danny did not get a bunch of Brits and painted them brown for this film, like they did for Gandhi and tonnes of other films.

I agree that the word is deregogatory and I have no idea why that tile was chosen. It will be interesting to find out about its origin.

Still the children in the movie are beautiful, smart, witty and completly adorable children.

Dear Indians/ Americans,
It is great insult for Indians. How dare the Americans can name the movie as Slumdog Millionaire for the movie based on Indian story? The word "Slumdog" really hurts. Somebody have an explanation, as the word "Dog" is not insulting. If you think it is fine to call the former United States President as "Bald-dog President" and the current one as "Black-dog President". Please be considerate about others too. You can ask me, “ Are you considering others?”. I will consider the people or a team who consider others. Call back the movie…!
