<description>This is an interesting piece, Deborah.

I think that access to e-books in Brazil can only be a good thing. The price of paperbacks in Brazil is very expensive when one considers that the majority of the population lives around the minimun salary level. I was surprised recently to find that paperback books in bookstores in Goias were often more expensive than here in London. In simple terms, most Brazilians cannot afford the &quot;luxury&quot; of new books!

Contrarily, internet usage across Brazil is widespread. In fact, on a recent trip to rural Piaui I was able to access the web without any problems. The only solution to encouraging wider book distribution and readership is lower prices, but in the interim, e-books provide a significant alternative source of literay access. The same argument can be made regarding the exclusivity of newspaper access in Brazil.
