The Australian writer "offended" the Thai monarchy? I'd say Thailand itself "offended" every sense of freedom and decency and civility throughout the entire civilized world by imprisoning this harmless man out of a primitive, dare I say anal-retentive, obsession with the sensibilities of a guy who is, at the end of the say, just a guy... even if he does wear a crown. Hey, my sensibilities are offended by what Thailand did. So whaddya say we put the whole country in jail for three months, hm? Or at least the dolts in Thai government who pulled off this little piece of utter moronism.

I think the Thai authorities are really good at coming up with solutions that are more or less like disciplines. Item A is bad, ban it. And Item A ranges from books to YouTube. That kind of solution will never work in a long run.

The most Ironic thing about this is more people will want to have a look at this book and what about it was so offensive in it. I think the best thing to do would be to ask him to make a public apology and let him go home and keep the attention off the book.

Monarchy is a very sensitive issue in Thailand. The society is not open enough to cope with any public criticisms about the royal family although most people say things about them all the time. Foreign journalists have had hard times reporting about the King. Youtube was even banned due to the problem. That being said, more and more Thais are coming out to protest and challenge the lese majeste charge. Things will change one day but just not now, under the reign of this much beloved King.

Well, he still had a go at it, and now he must face the music. He must have been well aware of the risk, nevertheless, he obviously couldn't resist taking the risk. Somnumna, I hear the Thais saying.
