You will be interested to know that people in West and East Timor use the ribs from beached sperm whales as part of the bride price for women from nearby islands..... and the teeth of the sperm whale sell for over 100USD/tooth to Chinese middlemen.

How thoughtful of you to quote Moby Dick as a response to Sara's beautiful post. You made me feel like reading that book again! Hard to believe that it was a failure during Herman Melville's life and is now considered one of the greatest literary works of all time!

But not only did each of these famous whales enjoy great individual celebrity—nay, you may call it an oceanwide renown; not only was he famous in life and now is immortal in forecastle stories after death, but he was admitted into all the rights, privileges, and distinctions of a name; had as much a name indeed as Cambyses or Caesar. Was it not so, O Timor Tom! thou famed leviathan, scarred like an iceberg, who so long did’st lurk in the Oriental straits of that name, whose spout was oft seen from the palmy beach of Ombay?
