At approximately 6:00 p.m. (GMT+2), Al Jazeera English reported that a UN school was hit when two tank shells exploded outside of the school. The school, located in Jabaliya, had been set up days ago as a shelter for Gaza residents who had lost or evacuated their homes. According to Al Jazeera English, more than 40 people were killed. On Al Jazeera English's television station (accessible globally via Livestation.com), it was reported that the IDF had been given GPS coordinates to all UN schools.
The Philistine reported quickly on the incident:
Medical officials say the death toll from an Israeli airstrike outside a United Nations school in the Gaza Strip has risen to 30.
The attack occurred about 10 yards (meters) outside the school in northern Gaza. It was the second deadly Israeli attack to strike a UN school in the past few hours.
Hospital director Bassam Abu Warda confirmed the 30 deaths from the second airstrike.
In both cases, the schools had been used as shelters for people displaced by Israel’s offensive
A top U.N. humanitarian official has condemned the violence and demanded an investigation.
Israel isn’t commenting.
Syria News Wire also reported quickly, stating:
40 people have now died after Israel’s bombing of a UN school in Gaza. 400 Palestinians were being given shelter there by the UN.

I am surprised at some of the responses people seem to make. If Israel wanted to expand then they had the opportunity to in 1956, 1967 and 1973. They just recently left southern Lebanon and the Gaza Strip. As for the lopsided military logic Ann, Al Quaeda was not concerned about our military when they attacked the United States. And anyone can see why the U.S. must support Israel, partly, because of the blatant anti-Semitism the whole wide world has toward Israel. Do Jews around the world attack mosques or Muslims? NO. But Jews are targeted everywhere and none of the countries where these attacks take place seem to care. Are citizens in Europe rising up because their own Jewish citizens are being attacked? The U.S. will support Israel because no one else will. At the end of WWI, the Ottoman Empire was broken up and guess what, all the countries in the middle east were created. In 1948 the United Nations created Palestine and Israel and washed their hands of the Jewish issue the same day that Arab armies attacked Israel.
Stop all the crying. If the Palestinians dont want their electricity turned off by the people they are shooting rockets at then build their own power plants. Dont the ARAB OIL COUNTRIES have enough money to build the Palestinians houses made out of gold. Oops, they dont give a crap about the palestinians except when they can be used for cannon fodder.
@Mark
I think your rational is so naive that you are comical. What most Israelis were trained to forget: that despite the Israeli withdrawal, Gaza is still occupied. Even before the Hamas takeover, Israel retained all the measures to ensure its effective control of the Strip: from direct control of all the border crossings to Gaza, both for goods and for persons, to Israeli control of Gaza’s population registry. The only apparent exception – the Rafah checkpoint – is restricted to entry into Gaza of Gaza inhabitants only, as defined by the Israeli registry, and even this is under Israeli supervision. But for most Israelis, Gaza is an independent, sovereign empire, which was occupied by Israel ages ago, and now, for no reason at all, poses an existential threat to its benevolent Jewish neighbour.
I feel sorry for you guys with all your “flip-flopping” and hiding like rabbits behind “The Politics of Anti-Semitism” and labelling others as Arab nationalist vowed on the destruction of Israel and going on a tangent as usual. What we are witnessing today is the worst scientific psychological experiment since the demise of the 3rd Reich on a civilian population. The Gazeans are trapped in an area the size of a neighbourhood of any European city, and are continuously being bombarded, for the few years now, from land, air and sea. Moreover, they are being humiliated, starved and collectively punished as and when the Israeli government feels like it. This is the Middle East version of the apartheid but more vicious and perverse. I would like also to inform you that people all around the world are starting to see through this masquerade, including many of our Jewish friends. This is a stand between barbarity and humanity. The Palestinian people are in my opinion are human beings, maybe you believe otherwise, that an Ishmaelite is nothing but a Shaygetz.
Israel as the occupying power under article 55 of the Geneva Convention “has the duty of ensuring the food and medical supplies of the population; it should, in particular, bring in the necessary foodstuffs, medical stores and other articles if the resources of the occupied territory are inadequate”. Israel failed to do so and used it as a bargaining political instrument for oppression. In fact, 1.5 million inhabitants are effectively prisoners. Israel strategy is to cut the blood supply to create an environment of chaos and destabilise the Hamas regime in Gaza. Israeli internal politics struggles also had a major influence on how the military campaign will be directed. Kadima and Avodah would have lost the elections handsomely if they have not shown that they are tough and a successful campaign in Gaza seriously improves the leftists’ chances in the elections. Also, a political readjustment with the arrival of a new American administration in few weeks was necessary. This kind of cynicism is nothing new to Israeli politicians and their miserable calculations.
Moreover, The fact stays and remains that the Ideology of “Redeemed” land is so engraved in the ‘Jewish Ideology’ that the feasibility of a Palestinian state is nearly impossible . Israel has an ideologically motivated pursuit of territorial expansion and the inevitable series of wars resulting from this aim. A number of discrepant versions of Biblical borders of the Land of Israel, which rabbinical authorities interpret as ideally belonging to the Jewish state, are in circulation since the inception of Israel. What we see today is just what Golda Meir and Menuhin Begin promised many decades ago. In other words, Israel aims at imposing hegemony on other Middle Eastern states, by protecting the stability of some Arab regimes and guaranteeing the stability of the Middle East.
This is what hamas is trying to do. they are very good at making the israeli people look bad. they hide behind children when they are taking fire, and they set up military bases in hospitals schools and mosques. these people are savages and must be stoped for the sake of both israeli and palestinian people…. for example during an israeli raid on the palestinian smuggling tunnels a tunnel collapsed on a group of hamas members. the israeli soldiers then saved the three terrorist, and gave them medical attention, clothed them and fed them. let me also remind you of what happened when two young israeli soldiers (Vadim Nurzhitz and Yossi Avrahami) mistakenly entered ramallah on oct 12 2000… They were ambushed, beaten, and then brutally lynched. Then the palestinians that murdered these soldiers celebrated on the streets, just like they did when two planes crashed into the twin towers on sep 11 2001. thats the difference between the israelis and these hamas terrorists, and what you americans who support them don’t understand. I Would also like to say that killing of children and civilians in any war is horrible… but people dont understand that hamas actually wants their children and civilians to be killed in the line of fire so they can win the political war, and make israel look bad. they have no values, and will grab a child and use him as a shield with out even thinking twice about it… these videos are all online, there are even statements from hamas stating that they use their citizens as shields. so please stop being so blind, and start seeing the big picture, these terrorists will not stop until the whole wester world is wiped out. we have to fight for what we love, and for the ones we love as well.
Gaza is the most populated place on earth. If you throw a needle from a Jumbo jet it will fall on somebody’s head. To say that Hamas is deliberately hiding behind populated areas is just not feasible and is simply a lie. You have murdered thousands upon thousands of civilians and made millions of people homeless. I will repeat it for the nnieth time, the solution is very simple and very clear as described by 60 United Nation resolutions “LEAVE THE OCCUPIED TERRITORIES”. Just in case you do not know them, I will give you a fresh reminder:
Palestinian Refugees have the right to return to their homes in Israel.
General Assembly Resolution 194, Dec. 11, 1948
“Resolves that the refugees wishing to return to their homes and live at peace with their neighbors should be permitted to do so at the earliest practicable date, and that compensation should be paid for the property of those choosing not to return and for loss of or damage to property which, under principles of international law or in equity, should be made good by the Governments or authorities responsible.”
Israel’s occupation of Palestine is Illegal.
Security Council Resolution 242, Nov. 22, 1967
Calls for the withdrawal of Israeli forces from territories occupied in the war that year and “the acknowledgment of the sovereignty, territorial integrity and political independence of every state in the area and their right to live in peace within secure and recognized boundaries free from threats or acts of force.”
Israel’s settlements in Palestine are Illegal.
Security Council Resolution 446, March 22, 1979
“Determines that the policy and practices of Israel in establishing settlements in the Palestinian and other Arab territories occupied since 1967 have no legal validity and constitute a serious obstruction to achieving a comprehensive, just and lasting peace in the Middle East.”
Palestinian have the right to Self-Determination.
General Assembly Resolution 3236, November 22, 1974
Affirms “the inalienable rights of the Palestinian people in Palestine…to self-determination without external interference” and “to national independence and sovereignty.”
Reaffirmation of a Palestinian State
Security Council Resolution 1397, March 12, 2002
Affirms “a vision of a region where two states, Israel and Palestine, live side by side within secure and recognized borders.”

Manus, for you to tell me that hamas is not using their children as human shields is simply ignorant, and naive. why dont you do me a favor and watch this video http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=J08GqXMr3YE maybe you will see the truth and stop being so blinded by your hate for israel. there can only be peace when these people care for their children as much as they hate israel… maybe then they can understand how to charish life, and not throw it away for a hatefull cause. for you to try to justify hamas’s attack on israel and its people is unbelieveable. they have been killing our children and our civilians. you are blinded by your hate for israel. only when hamas is taken out of power can there be a possibility of peace
Oh ya and watch this video as well. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=eTGbP55HGi8 do you think that it is right to bring children into an environment of hate and war. The UN has ignored this, and something has to be done for the sake of these children and the sake of the whole world.
I wonder what kind of excuses you guys will give me after watching this video…
If you are going to murder them soon I think it’s only fair they learn how to defend themselves at a very early age. Your civilians are fine as the glorified firecrackers the Palestinians are using are no more then a desperate act. Please stop the propaganda and face the consequences of your despicable acts. Your PR machine is loosing credibility and momentum. As far as the video is concerned it does not prove anything. However, Israel uses the most sophisticated techniques to brain wash people in the west. Have a look at this:

By the way I have researched this subject for more than 25 years and please spare the misinformation. This type of discourse will maybe succeed if addressed to the “American Common man” with the intellectual ability of an amoeba, or a Foxnews television viewer.
This the truth of Gaza:

manus, i am not saying that every Palestinian and every Muslim is a bad person, most of them are good people caught in a horrible war, and forced to live in a constant state of terror. i pray that one day we will be able to live in peace with these people. but this war cannot stop until hamas is gone. these people in charge of gaza are not so peaceful. these people look for a way to kill instead of a way to better the towns and the conditions they live in, for the better sake of the people living there. instead of using tunnels to smuggle weapons, why not use them better their world. these people are supplying this world with anger and hate and terror. they should be spending their time manufacturing goods to sell on the world market, not bombs to kill innocent people. and the fact that the weapons they use are low grade and inaccurate is no excuse to shoot them into israel. you compare these Katusha and grad rockets to fire crackers… have you ever been in a neighborhood when one hit. i don’t think so, these rockets are deadly and are used to terrorize the innocent civilians of Israel. It is time that hamas face the consequences of their horrible onslaught of terror, and hopefully the innocent people in gaza will be freed from these monsters. they are terrorized by their own government. would you willingly live under hamas rule? i dont think that anyone other than hamas themselves would.
