Egypt: Egyptian Dialect Wikipedia

Wikimedia has agreed to create a new section - a Wikipedia in the Egyptian Dialect. This decision was the catalysis for a discussion across the Egyptian blogosphere. Is it a good or a bad move, and is Egyptian and standalone language, or just a dialect of Arabic?

Iknaton2, from A Whisper, wrote here:

وافقت ويكيميديا على تخصيص نطاق خاص لويكيبيديا باللغة المصرية بعد أن تقدم بعض مستخدمى الويكيبيديا بطلب إنشاء هذا النطاق على أساس أن اللغة المصرية لها مفردات وقواعد مختلفة عن اللغة العربية يستخدمها أكثر من 70 مليون!!
بالنظر لطلبات إنشاء ويكيبيديا بلغات/لهجات عربية مختلفة نجد عدة طلبات للهجات العربية مثل اللهجة السودانية (ما زالت تُناقش) واللهجة الجزائرية المغربية (رُفضت بتاريخ 23 أبريل 2007) واللهجة اللبنانية (رُفضت بتاريخ 7 نوفمبر 2007).
موسوعة ويكيبيديا باللغة المصرية الآن تحتوى على 43 مقالة باللهجة العامية المصرية وهناك إقتراح من بعض مستخدمى ويكيبيديا العربية على غلق هذه الموسوعة على أساس أنه ليس هناك لغة إسمها لغة مصرية وهى مجرد لهجة مختلفة من لهجات العربية
Wikimedia has agreed to create a new domain for Wikipedia in the Egyptian language, after some Wikipedia users have submitted a request to create such domain claiming that the Egyptian language is a standalone language that has its own vocabulary and rules which are different from the Arabic language, and is spoken by more the 70 million people.
There have been various requests to create domains for different languages/dialects such as the Sudanese dialect (the request currently is being discussed), the Algerian dialect (the request was refused in the 23rd of April 2007), and the Lebanese dialect (the request was refused in the 7th of November 2007).
The Egyptian Wikipedia currently contains 43 topics in the Egyptian slang, while there is a suggestion for the Arabic Wikipedia users to close the Egyptian section since they claim that the Egyptian is just an Arabic dialect and not a separate language.

Those guys have a wrong perception about the development history of the national languages in Europe, and they want to imitate what they believe is the best way for languages to evolve! You know, it is like that silly theory that claims that it was just the Latin language there, then it gave birth to all the other languages.
They also have a different perception about the role of languages to enforce people's national identity and nations development. And this is still related to their incorrect perception of the history of languages in Europe. They do not feel the value of having a common language that facilitates the communication with more people, even more than those who happen to be in the same geographic area when countries borders were created. And they also cannot see the effect of this on our accumulated knowledge and cultural products.
Their intention is good but they lack the knowledge and understanding. Anyway, we have nothing to lose here and at least we may learn something from their experiment.

I was really upset when I read your post, Rami.
I couldn't imagine that our Arabic language is going to deteriorate to this level.
Although there are different dialects, but still they are just verbal ones, and it is enough that someday Egyptians will not be able to understand Lebanese or Moroccan people when they talk. Traditional Arabic has always been the common language between us, and the one that we all understand easily.
Can you imagine what will happen after few generations when there will be Moroccan or Somali Arabic. It's a joke you know.
Anyway, I logged into the page where I can submit my disagreement to the idea, but it came out that it has been deactivated. Whom shall I talk to now to show my refusal?

The differences between languages and dialects is a source of huge debates, but when it comes to modern Arabic, most of the linguistics - who are by the way non Arabs, and are not affected by our ideological debates - believe that the variations in vocabulary and grammar between the Arabic dialects spoken nowadays are not enough to make them languages, which is somehow different than the Maltese, for example, which was based on the Arabic spoken in North Africa but it's a standalone language now.
I think that most of those who are with the Egyptian language are Egyptian and Coptic Nationalists and chauvinists who have problems in understanding the history of Egypt and its value as a state, and they also fail to understand ideologies such as ethnic, lingual and cultural pan-Arabism. They are affected by the cultural degradation we are now suffering from, and in such an era, calls like those are more common. These are calls that are also affected by the lack of understanding of the origin and evolution of languages, and their relation with our ethnic and national identity. Have a look in the Egyptian blogosphere and you will find tons of such ideas there.

First of all there is nothing called the Egyptian language.
There is an Egyptian dialect instead.
This is an unacceptable chauvinism.

Well then I have a nice suggestion , I do not know if it is available or not but we can add spell and grammar checker to Arabic Wikipedia.
I do not know what the next will be ; a PortSaidi or Upper Egyptian dialect Wikipedia !!??

That was a big controversy in Wikimania Alexandria, lots of under the table politics.
IMO it's an insignificant project that's bound to fail. so not very important to think about anyway. and while fragmentation might sound like a bad idea the reality is most probably those who contribute to the “Egyptian” Wikipedia where not going to contribute to the Arabic one anyway.

lol u guys are overreacting the benefits of having a unified language across the arab world are so high, no need to feel threatened.
if you're so worried about it do something, go help with arabic wikipedia and make the best source of knowledge there is in the arab world. that's the best way to insure that your children will know fos7a and like it too.

Think of it as a more intuitive scratch pad for developing articles in formal Arabic. So I might write an article in Egyptian dialect because, for me, it will consume less energy and time to write. Someone else might decide to contribute to it or transfer the information in it to the formal Arabic wiki. Exactly like what happens between the different Wikipedia languages.

Let me ask another question. Away from Wikipedia, I can see that we have two points of view out there, either in Wikipedia, or in Blogs, or even in a satellite channel like O-TV. Some may claim that we are Egyptian and that we have to be proud of our own dialect, and that the Arabic language has failed to evolve in the last 1400 years, and it is really useless to bond ourselves to a language that wasn't capable of evolving like any other language in the word. And those who hold such claim are mainly liberals, secular and Copts. While on the other hand others - Islamists and Pan-Arabists - believe that we have to protect traditional Arabic, because it facilitates our communication with other Arabs and it also is links us to our cultural and religious heritage, and they believe that abandoning the traditional Arabic language may affect our identity and widen the gaps between Arabs.
So who point of view do you agree with more?

I think that there are few ones in the two team who have the louder voice and those who make us see it that way.
Some people out there may listen to poems written in Egyptian dialect and read novels written in traditional Arabic, yet this has nothing to do with their ideologies.
People will never stop using the Egyptian dialect. It will last forever.
Also there are huge economical benefits of having a common language among all Arabs, so it will last forever too.
I also do not agree with you that Arabic doesn't evolve, it evolves but its evolution is in resonance with our civil evolution.
There are plenty of economical, scientific, and other matters that are more important than our debate whether we are Arabs or Egyptians.

I am with you, for sure not all those who blog in the Egyptian dialect are liberals, and also not all those who write poems in traditional Arabic are Pan-Arabists or Islamists. But we can't deny that some may prefer to use one more than the other based on their ideologies and not only based on the one they find easier.
And let me disagree with you about the evolution of Arabic as a language. We all know that some grammatical rules in Arabic are outdated and not acceptable nowadays, and this can be seen where the current dialects have abandoned them. But it is hard to liberate the Arabic language from such rules since we do not want it to be shifted away from the one the Quraan was written in. And also in our daily lives when we need to invent a new word it has to pass through language authorities first, which is the opposite to what happen in other languages where the evolution starts from the people and ends in the lab and not the other way round. In the English language, for example, words like “to Google”, and “robot” where invented based on a web application or science-fiction books, while here any evolution is only limited to labs and academies.

Egypt: Change the Channel Initiative

During the past few months, Egyptians have been haunted with catastrophic headlines and top stories on a daily basis - from murders, to corruption, to a series of fires, to sexual harassment… not to mention the effect of the global economical crises that the Egyptian officials allegedly confirmed hasn't significantly affected the (already) deteriorating economy. Seriously, it was like a spell has been cast on Egypt and caused a series of unfortunate events.

Amid this grim, Egyptian bloggers decided to revolt against the country's current rueful state and bring out some positive energy to the surface through the “Change the Channel” campaign.

The campaign is the brainchild of blogger Tarek Amr, one of Global Voices Online's authors, who describes it as follows:

أنا كانت عندي بوادر عقدة نفسية عشان كل مأقرأ المدونات المصرية ألاقي تعذيب و تحرش و إعتصامات و محاكم و بلاوي سودة.
و بعد كده لما شاركت في جلوبال فويسز لاقيت نفسي مطالب بإنتقاء تدوينات كل فترة لكي أترجمها للغة الإنجليزية حتى يقرأها العالم. و هنا إتحولت العقدة إلى عقدة و شنيطة و كان شبه مستحيل إني ألاقي في وسط هذا الكم من السواد بصيص أمل يحسس الناس إن مصر برضه بلد حلوة مش مستنقع.
“I was on a verge of a nervous breakdown because whenever I read any of the Egyptian blogs, I find nothing but torture, harassment, demonstrations, etc. Later on, when I started writing for Global Voices, I was required to select and translate blog posts into English for the world to read. At this point I fell in the clutches of a breakdown, it was almost impossible to find that little light at the end of the tunnel, the light that would make the Egyptians feel that Egypt is a beautiful country not a swamp.”

He then continues:

“That's why I started to discuss the initiative with some bloggers/friends and we decided to dedicate a day every month in which we can showcase a positive image about our country. The participation may not only be blog posts, it could be pictures, illustrations, audio or video clips. One day during the month we change from the black wavelength to a brighter one and hence we decided to name the campaign “Change the Channel “. It will fall on the same day that has the same number of the month; i.e: 1-Jan, 2-Feb, 3-March…..12-Dec”

The initiative is highly encouraged and welcomed around the Egyptian bloo sphere and some bloggers are exhilarated about going pink. In her blog, Jessy decided to change the tone until further notice:

“I am going to limit this negative input and replace it with more positive and healthy messages, at least in my own pink bubble life”

The HUB UDHR60 badgeThe sixtieth anniversary of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights is on December 10th, and Witness' The Hub team has put together a video that responds to the question: What images have opened your eyes to Human Rights? The video is online right now and with it they are asking all of us to participate by showing and telling the world about the power images have had in making us care about Human Rights.

The images used on their video all came from the archives at Witness' The Hub, a platform for uploading Human Rights related videos. In this short clip, Human Rights abuses in Afghanistan, Argentina, Brazil, Burma, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, the Chechen Republic in Russia, the Philippines and West Sudan are featured.

The call for answers to their question is open for everyone, and there are different ways to respond:

China: Official report — political aristocracy has ruled national wealth

Power makes money, money makes power, this is not unusual. That the owners of power have innate intention to pass on the privilege to their children, as well, is more than estimable. But the specific degree of such phenomena in China have nonetheless long been clouded as a taboo.

This, if any one has done the research, must have been a top secret. But thanks to the “unusual openness” of Chinese media, a striking figure comes to the light. Perhaps what surprised us more is no longer the expected fact how notable the monopolization of social wealth is associated with political power, but that what unprecedented honesty allows these figures slip into Xinhua News, the state-owned media, and open to public.

The figures are revealed in two sets of reports which are both quoted in a professor’s article on a newspaper. The article is put online on Xinhua.net, named “Word of worry: what’s behind the groups of astonishing numbers”. It was soon called into attention in blogsphere. Muji in Bullog.cn picked the text and exposed the most significant data on the title:

官方:亿万富翁3220人中2932人是高干子女

Official report: 2932 of 3220 billionaires in China are children of senior officials.

The original article says

中国社会科学院两年前的《当代中国社会流动》研究报告曾有统计说,我国处于社会优势地位的阶层,高干子女职业继承性明显增强,“干部子女当干部的机会比常人高2.1倍”。

< social mobility in modern China>, a research report 2 years ago by China Social Academy suggests that, the children of senior officials have much better chances to inherit their parents’ status. “The children of officials have 2.1 times better chance to become officials than others”.

What’s more telling is the data revealed by a co-effort of several central research agencies, including the Research Center of State Council and Central Academy of CPC:

Up to March this year, 27310 people in China possess, each of them, a fortune over 50 million (Yuan), 3220 with over 100 million each, and 2932 of them are children of senior officials; their aggregate fortune amounts to 2045 billion. The further study finds that, the fortune is mostly derived from illegal income facilitated by their family’s political power, and illegal income that is from legal sources (as read in the original text—translator).

Armenia: CNN Genocide Coverage ControversyVideo post

Too short for Armenians and too long for the Turkish government, a two-hour CNN documentary by Christiane Amanpour on genocide includes a 45-second mention of the WWI extermination of Ottoman Empire's indigenous Armenian population. Premiered on December 4, 2008, Scream Bloody Murder has made many Armenian bloggers angry, leading them to recall Hitler's rhetoric for impunity, “Who, after all, remembers the Armenians?”

Armenia-based blogger, photographer and designer Arsineh had concerns even before watching the documentary. Writing on Ars Eye View, she says:

If you are going to cover the epidemic of genocide, starting with the campaign to criminalize genocide, continue to show the struggle so many have endured to (as you titled your program) “SCREAM BLOODY MURDER” while the world turned a deaf ear only to allow genocide to continue around the world, shouldn't you be talking about the biggest cover up of genocide, the very one which inspired Lemkin to coin the word, the very one which also inspired Adolf Hitler to follow through with the Holocaust? Afterall, it's this denial that scares CNN from ever using the word “Genocide” in their reporting on related matters.

When will this second class genocide victim status end? I guess CNN is afraid that CNN-Turk will be cut off the air if they include the Armenians… how very, very sad.

Another diasporan voice, Seta’s Armenian Blog posts an action alert by the Armenian National Committee of America to protest CNN’s almost exclusion of the Armenian Genocide.

Dozens of users of CNN's iReport have also reacted to the documentary by posting comments on anchor Christiane Amanpour’s page, most of them condemning a short mention of the Armenian Genocide.

Amanpour, by the power of her camera and microphone, breathed life to the screaming voices of the forgotten activists, and deservedly amplified the “bloody murder” calls of the moral few, such as: Eli Wiesel, Father Francois Ponchaud, Peter Galbraith, Richard Holbrook, Romeo Dallaire and other unsung heroes, but Amanpour chose dead silence instead to the screams of Henry Morgenthau, the US Ambassador to the Ottoman Empire at the time of the Armenian Genocide — Morgenthau too, 'screamed bloody murder.' Shameful in the eyes of many Armenians, even the short mention of the WWI genocide, nonetheless, has angered nationalist Turks. The blog of the Turkish Coalition of America, for instance, posts YouTube videos by Bruce Fein, a conservative Harvard lawyer with strong links to Turkey, challenging CNN’s inclusion of the Armenian Genocide in the documentary.

Furthermore, the blog of The New York Turkish Times posts an action alert, apparently a letter that a Turkish organization sent to CNN before the broadcast, asking supporters to sign the letter which says it “condemn[s] CNN for its decision to broadcast a two-hour special report titled ‘Screamed [sic] Bloody Murder' that will include a discussion about ‘So-Called Armenian Genocide' on December 4, 2008.”

Genocide is a legal term. The only legally recognized genocides are the Holocaust and the Rwandan Genocide. How can CNN Intl Correspondent Christiane Amanpour criminalize denial of a so called genocide that does not even legally and historically exist? As you probably might know according to article 2 of the UN Convention on Genocide of 1948 “there has to be an intension to exterminate a race, ethnic group..”

While there is a clear international law for the term genocide, why don't Armenians take the so-called case to an international court.

Korea: Train Connecting North and South Stopped.

The train service that connects North Korea and South Korea was suspended on the 28th of November. [En] When the train that stopped more than 50 years started operating after the North and South Korean summit last year, people were excited and expected closer relations. Due to the increase in stiff relations between the two governments, the North Korean government announced the halt. Netizens respond to these gradual changes of their relations.

남북철도, 잇는데 50년! 끊는데 1년!

예전에 남북문제나 통일관련 다큐멘터리에 단골로 등장하던 경원선 신탄리역의 철도중단점은 통일에 대한 염원과 더불어 우리에게 분단국가의 슬픔을 한층 더 깊어지게 하는 상징이었다. 끊어진 철도와 멈춰서있는 기관차, 그리고 비석에 박힌 ‘철마는 달리고 싶다’는 글귀는 우리들을 더욱 애상에 젖어들게 하는 것이었다.

남북정상회담 이후 작년 5월 17일 반세기만에 남과 북을 잇는 시험 열차가 운행되면서 철마의 꿈은 이루어지는 듯했다. 사람들은 50년 넘도록 멈춰있던 남과 북을 잇는 열차가 운행되면서 기쁨에 들떴고 서울에서 파리까지, 모스크바까지, 런던까지 가는 상상을 하며 다가올 남북교류와 협력에 기대를 걸었다. 그리고 작년 12월 11일 정기열차가 운행되면서 이러한 기대는 바로 현실이 될 수 있는 전기를 마련했다.

하지만 이명박정부 출범 후 악화일로를 걷게 된 남북관계는 철마의 50년 꿈을 1년도 되지 않아 다시 접게 만들었다. 북측에서 “6.15공동선언과 10.4선언을 부정하고 북남대결을 집요하게 추구해온 남측당국”에게 책임을 물으며 개성관광과 남북열차운행을 전면 중단시킨 것이었다.

북측은 이번 조치를 ‘1차적’인 것이라고 강조했다. 앞으로 남측의 반응을 보아가며 차후조치를 취할 것이란 이야기다. 하지만 현재로선 앞으로 남북관계는 더 악화될 것이란 예상이 지배적이다. 국민의 정부, 참여 정부 10년간 진행한 햇볕정책과 그 부산물들이 불과 1년도 안되어 도로아미타불이 될 상황에 놓여있다.[…]

Reconnecting the North-South Korean Railway after 50 years and disconnecting it again in 1 year!

The place where the train didn’t move at the Sintanli Station was a popular scene in documentaries regarding reunification or North-South Korean issues. It was the symbol of sorrow of the divided country and of desire to be re-unified. The disconnected railway, stopped train, and a letter ‘Train wants to run’ made us grieve.

After the North-South Korean Summit on the 17th of May last year, the train connecting North and South was finally operated after half a century. It seemed that what the train dreamt for came true. People were excited in watching the train be operated and even expected that it would run to Paris, Moscow, and London. We expected cooperation between North and South Korea. And then, on the 11th of December, the regular train started operating. It was the moment that the dream turned into reality.

However, since the new government launched, North-South Korean relations became worse and 50 year dream of the train had to stop in 1 year. North Korea threw the blame to “the South Korean government that seeks for North-South conflicts and denies the 6.15 Summit and the 10.4 Summit” and stopped operating North-South Korean train completely.

The North Korean government emphasized this as the first step. That means that they would have different settlements depending on South Korean attitudes. However, we mostly predict that it would be worse. What we have done for 10 years would disappear within 1 year.

It was painful to watch that the train engineman with a sour smile said ‘it will be operated again soon.’ Thick fog in front of the railway between North and South Korea and the train there… we don’t know when it can run again.

What is the right direction for reunification?

이산가족상봉은 꿈에도 못꾸고, 금강산 개성관광, 남북철도중지..점점 더 꼬여가는 남북관계 과연 이상황까지 오게된 원인이 무엇이고, 누구에게 책임이 있을까요? 남쪽 북쪽 분명..일방적으로 한쪽 잘못은 아니겠죠? 그러나 한가지 분명한것은 과거 10년동안 우호적인 남북관계가 극단적인 대치상황에 와있고, 앞으로도 더 깊어질것 같다는 것입니다.

한날당은 과거 야당시절부터 남북관계의 기본 전략으로 “상호주의”를 주장하고 있습니다. 내가 떡하나 주면 너도 떡하나 달라..솔직히 남한은 북한의 핵을 빼면, 경제력, 군사력(재래식무기)차이가 비교가 안될정도입니다. 압도적 우위에 있는 상황에서 상호주의를 주장, 더구나 한피를 나눈 민족입니다. 통독전 서독은 어떠했습니까? 공산주의국가중 가장 부자나라인 동독을 상대로 서독은 유무상으로 지원해준 경제지원금이 엄청났다고 합니다. 서독 국민들은 바보였습니까?[…]

Now split family members can’t have a dream to meet their separate family members in the North. Stopping Mt. Geumgang Tourism and the North-South railway… Relations are getting worse. What made the situation like this? Who has responsibility? North Korea? South Korea? I don’t think that it is caused by one side. However, what is clear is that friendly relations between North and South Korea for 10 years have turned sour and will be worse.

The Grand National Party emphasizes “reciprocity” as the basic strategy of North-South Korean relations. If I give a rice-cake, you should give one back… Honestly speaking, except nuclear weapons, South Korea can’t be compared to North Korea in terms of ‘economic power’ and ‘military power.’ We’re in the much superior situation and now we’re insisting on reciprocity. In addition, we’re sharing one ethnicity. Think about West Germany before reunification! They financially supported East Germany disregarding compensation. At that time, East Germany was the richest Communist country. Does that mean that West Germans were stupid?

28일 오전 9시 30분. 도라산역에서 S4401 열차가 힘차게 기적소리를 울리며 북측을 향해 떠났다. 최근 북측의 육로통행 제한에 따른 마지막 열차였다. 지난해 12월 11일 다시 개통된 경의선 철도가 남북관계 경색으로 다시 운행이 중단된 것이다. 이날 남북출입사무소(CIQ)와 도라산역을 뒤덮은 짙은 안개는 현재의 남북관계를 그대로 보여주는 듯했다.

“착잡하다… 이렇게 늦게 출발한 것은 처음 있는 일” 지난해 12월부터 220여회 경의선 열차 운행에 참가했던 기관사 신장철씨는 ‘마지막 운행' 소감을 묻는 질문에 “착잡하다”고 답했다. “남북관계가 빨리 정상화되어서 더 많은 열차가 남북을 오가길 바란다.” 신씨는 “현재 북측의 분위기는 달라진 게 없다”고 전한 뒤 “북측도 열차 운행 등에 열정을 가지고 있다”며 “더 많은 열차 운행이 이루어질 수 있도록 남북이 모두 노력해야 한다”고 말했다.

이날 마지막 열차는 평소 출발시간보다 30분 늦은 9시 30분에 출발했다. 이와 관련, 신씨는 “이렇게 늦어진 것은 처음 있는 일”이라며 이런 설명을 덧붙였다.

“원래 오전 8시 50분께 북측의 승인이 떨어지면 일단 개성관광 버스가 통과한다. 그 다음에 열차가 출발하고 일반 화물 열차가 북측으로 들어간다. 열차는 보통 9시에 출발해 왔는데 오늘은 좀 늦었다.” 북측의 제한조치에 따라 하루 7차례였던 출경횟수도 4차례로 바뀌었다.[…]

At 9:30 am on the 28th, S4401 train at Dorasan Station left for the North Korean side with a steam whistle. It was the last train since the North Korean government changed its attitude. The train could start running on the 11th of December last year, but due to the stiff relations between North and South Korea the operation stopped. Thick fog that covered the Dorasan Station and Customs, Immigration, and Quarantine (CIQ) seemed to show the current relations between North Korea and South Korea.

“My feelings are complicated… It was the first time to leave so late like this.” The engineer man, Shin Jang Chul who joined this train operation from last December and who operated it 220 times answered. “I hope that our relations get better again and more trains will come across.” He said, “North Korean atmosphere has changed yet either. They also have the passion to operate trains. North Korea and South Korea both of us should make efforts to operate more trains.”

The last train started at 9:30 am, which was 30 minutes late. About this, Mr. Shin said, “It is the first time to be late.” He added, “Usually, after North Korea approves at 8:50 am, the Kaesung Tourism Bus leaves first. And then, the train heads off to the Northern part with containers. The train usually leaves at 9. Today it was late.” After the stiff relations started, North Korea limited to accept 4 trains from 7 times.[…]
