Many of them were not just harassed but also molested and raped often by male relatives like uncles and cousins. The basic problem was much the same as here, the guys were taught that they could do anything they wanted because they were men and the girls were taught that "nice" girls were quiet and obedient. My mother and her friends decided that enough was enough and taught their sons to do housework and cooking and to treat women politely and their daughters that "nice" girls make a fuss when mistreated. It's past time to focus a light on the misbehaviour of the men who harass and make the larger effort to bring up a generation of boys who we would all be happy to be friends with or marry.
