Google is now allowing .ME domain holders to geo-target like any standard TLD, as opposed to treating like a cctld.

This has really become an issue with .me domains which were advertised to be genuine generic TLDs.
Google automatically sets a geographic target for them to Montenegro and as far as I know there is no way to remove/change this default association.

A new, US startup has just launched using the .me domain - twitpay.me. Interesting to see one come about so quickly.

Yeah, I know, that's why Montenegro was so lucky to get the 'me' ending. Just fortunate for them. I was going to talk more about where the money is going from the sales of the names, but that's even less transparent than the auction system. If anyone has any information on that, I'd love to hear it as Montenegro is quite small and they're making a lot of money off this sale that could really benefit the country IF it makes it out of the hands of the government authority.

[...] Miquel Hudin Balsa relates his experience playing around to get a tasty .me name. The process looks like it’s set up as much to monetize the connection to the English-speaking world as to actually get people in Montenegro registered. As for the assignment itself, 21 of a possible 26 dot-m-whatever combinations were already taken; Macau, Malta and Mongolia had already claimed some of the likelier candidates. [...]
