Marilisa Lorusso's Blog comments on the conflict between Georgia and Russia over South Ossetia and says that the military solution has brought the world closer to a new Cold War. However, the blog notes, while the Georgian president continues to survive defeat on the battlefield, a political solution would have led to a situation that benefitted more of those involved — and not least hundreds of thousands of IDPs without homes in Georgia, Abkhazia and South Ossetia.

The time has come for someone to stand up to the arrogance of the US and I think that Russia should confront the Americans and NATO. I fully support what the Russians did in Georgia.The US and NATO got away with Iraq and Kosovo. The time has come for Russia to assert itself.
Power should not be used in the settlement of disputes, but this was what Georgia tried to do against South Ossetia.
We should seek instead to do what we believe to be right. Territorial “integrity” is not as important as the lives of people.
It is not the frontiers, the territorial arrangements, that matter most; what is most important is what happens to the people within the frontiers, what kind of life future they decide for themselves and what sort of government they prefer to live under.
