Following clashes and allegations of the shelling of Georgian villages by separatists in the breakaway territory of South Ossetia, there are fears that war will once again rage in the volatile South Caucasus. With the media reporting that Georgian troops have surrounded the capital, Tskhinvali, all eyes are on how Russia reacts to the latest developments. Writing on BattleForums, Uncle_Vanya says that this is war.
The war has just begun yesterday, Georgia began massive military operations to capture South Ossetia, so far the civilian bodycount is 15 dead. South Ossetian capitol of Tshinvali is surrounded by Georgian forces and is being pounded by Georgian airforce. A few minutes ago Russian Peacekeeper HQs in the region reported that there were direct artillery hits on the barracks of the Russian peacekeepers and there were wounded. Russia is going to war, we haven't moved the troops yet but with our peacekeepers wounded we now have no choice, Russia is at a defacto state of war with Georgia. There is a report by Georgian ministry of Defense of a pack of Russian Su-24 ground attack aircraft dropping bombs of a Georgian city of Karel, the main city police building has been heavily damaged with bombardment, no reports of casualties as of yet. As I said, weeks later Russian forces have already been assembling at the North Ossetian-South Ossetian border and will most likely begin mobilizing towards the conflict zone some time today. […]
Georgia already considers Russian peacekeepers in the territory to be a party to the conflict, and the situation is made even more volatile by the fact that most South Ossetians hold Russian passports. Some media sources also report that Russia is alleged to have struck targets in Georgia proper. B & C Go To Georgia, a Peace Corps blog, already reports there are some signs that this might be true.

With all that said, the situation here is worse than it has been in the time we've been in Georgia. This is my own personal opinion (not the opinion of Peace Corps or the U.S. government), but I think this might develop into a full-scale war.

Its all booting off now in Georgia … The Georgian military have stormed into one of the two wannabe breakaway zones, South Ossetia … and the Russians are vowing to defend their “compatriots”. Russian peacekeepers have been among the casualties. President Medvedev has summoned his security council, PM Putin has vowed there will be a response from Russia. Georgian President Saakashvili has called up all reservists.

But in a region where frozen conflicts and ethnic tensions threaten stability, perhaps the last word should be left to two cups of tea which says that “war is killing beautiful South Ossetia.”
War has come to a new part of our world today. As in all wars, innocent lives are affected in tragic ways. This does not come as a surprise on any of the party’s involved in the conflict.
It is sad however that Georgia, Russia and South Ossetia cant come to a peaceful solution.

South Ossetia has no sovreignty, and is not recognized by the United States, the UN, NATO, or the EU as an independent nation. Therefore, Russia has illegaly invaded the sovreign nation of Georgia. Some time ago Russian troops left Georgia. RF goverment proved no interest to its territory. And what now? American solgers (about 130) came and tought Georgians army! That was a good lesson of violense: Gr troops destroed south ossetia capital with havy artirelry. More then 1000 people is dead. Us is good teachers as we can find out. They have a great expearense from Irak, Jugoslavia and Vietnam. They are realy best in killing civilians. And Georgia want to be eqval?? We will not simply whatch! Russia must protect civil rights and freedom for ossetin people. And we already do it.
Russia is using this situation as an opportunity to get back the land it lost. Russia has no general concern for the welfare of the people in the breakaway regions. Russia has always had a strong thirst for power and it is no surprise that they are invadeing a country that lacks the resources to defend themselves.

However, the Georgian side skillfully uses methods of historical falsifications, political insinuations. Georgia enjoys the patronage of a criminal government of the USA, and presents events in the world misrepresented.
At the moment the most part of South Ossetia is erased by the Georgian aggressors. There continue to die elderly, women, children.
The death toll is unknown, because of the Georgian side fired them all who tried to help the wounded. Children are among them.
Not comparable with anything Georgian cruelty let know even in 91-92 years.
When Georgians at point-blank range shot civilians of South Ossetia, as the example of the bus which was driving with people on bypass road, Zar. No one will forget it!
Georgian fascists made all people go out, from the bus and fired them. They also fired point-blank women and children and kids . They fired even the little three-year-old boy, who hid away under the body of his mother.
What else can we say of Georgia?
They buried people alive, burnt them and tortured them in different methods. After all that the world community is silent and Georgians continue to kill. Saakashvili doesn’t feel sorry for anybody, even for his Georgians.
For him, the notion of “people” and “meat” is not much different and probably, he prefers more the second.
There is only one way for peace - it is declaration of the independence by the world community.
We call on all decent people of the world not to remain indifferent to the fate of the Ossetian people.
Every side of conflict is wrong.
What they all want:
South Ossetia wants its people to be protected (they don`t believe Georgia), it wants complete independence.
Georgia didn`t want to loose its territory.
Russia wants (and has to) protect people in S.Ossetia who have Russian passports and its peacekeapers.
But just have a look at the methods which every side uses (of wich I know…):
Ossetia: refused to accept autonomy within Georgian borders when having been offered. It is trying to involve Russia as “big brother” in the conflict. They want more that they can really get - they want complete independence. And they want to pay for it with Russian blood (and their own, of course).
Georgia: this bastard Saakashvilly has ordered a full-scale military assault against Tshinvalli (S.Ossetia capitol). Of course he knew perfectly how Russia will react. He wants Russia to look like an aggressor - he seeks military aid from U.S., he wants his country to become member of NATO.
Russia: rises to the bait, first vowing to revenge arrogantly, second moving large regular (!) army (60,000 soldiers, 150 battle-planes, tanks) in S.Ossetia thus violating Georgia`s borders. (one more division is on its way to Tshinvalli)
And now we have:
S.Ossetia: ruined capital city, thousands (1,500 oficially reported) deaths.
Russia: market crush (6,5% up to this point), one more black hole which consumes lives, energy and money which will last for long (regular army never move out too fast, you know)
Georgia: ruined reputation, gained hatred of hundred of thousand people, economical and military crash.
And yet what we can have:
1.Russian-Georgian war. Christ, I hope that will not happen. But think of this: large Russian military force standing in central Georgia. Unknown people start to shoot soldiers. Soldiers shoot back: hundreds of victims. And finaly the Government reacts and Russian tanks already in Tbilisi (Georgian capital).
2. Russian-American war. This one is from my deapest fears. Americans do what Saakashvilly wants: they agree to think that it was Russia who attacked first. Then they sent their army to Georgia to help it defend against Russian threat (just like they helped Kosovo against Serbia).
Russia can`t remove because of pressing from population (people tend to seek blood when they think they were cheated). Finally, Nuclear war.
Peoples of Georgia, Ossetia and Russia are on friendly terms with each other. But their governments are not. In my opinion, they just don`t want to sit and talk about their problems civilly. By arrogant and stupid acting they only multiply their count. (Don`t think that I regard so only my government, please)

In the night 7 to 8-th august georgian MLRS battarey attacked sleeping Tskhinvali… By the way, do u know that fire from even one of this unit covers several sqare kilometers? All that occurs now in Ossetia - only big game of politicians, namely they operate our countries and create to us our point of view! If you consider that you have the personal point of view - you are mistaken. To you and me of it have given politics. Very good example represents TV (I can judge the Russian channels, BBC, SNN - everywhere only one propagation). Germans too spoke that their concentration camp - bases of rest.
Therefore it is not necessary to be so confident the words. The truth is not known by anybody.

Most Ossettians are citizens of Russian Federation! And they were under heavy attack from Georgia. Russia is protecting there own citizens.
American volunteers are head for Georgia. Military experience required. Sniper experience desired. A friend of mine fighting the Russians tells me they are castrating captured Russian soldiers. Again another example of Russian agression when it justifies its needs. Why are the russians crossing into the soveriegn nation of Georgia? As they claim, “To Protect Rusian Citizens” what a bunch of bullshit! South Ossetia was never an independant nation, it is still considered part of Georgia. But because the Russians conveniently gave the South Ossetians Russian Passports, Russia will now use that as an excuse to violate a nations sovereinty. How convenient! If they live within the borders of Georgia are they not first “Georgian” citizens? If they want to be Russian citizens first then therefore shouldn’t they leave Georgia and go to Russia?
The real reason Russia is going to war is because now they realize that all these former USSR republics have great wealth in Natural Gas and possibly oil that they themselves could not exploit because of there limited technologies. Now that these countries such as Georgia, Azerbajan, Kazakstan, Turkmenistan, are developing the Natural Gas exports, with the assistance of western democracies (Turkey included)Russia wants a piece of the pie. This lie is no better than the lie our American President used to invade Iraq. So you see there is a reason Vladimir Putin and George Bush get along so well. The enraged Georgia started looking for another sponsor. And there came the USA. The economic situation did not change for the better yet. A way out? – An old trick in an attempt to distract the nation’s attention from the real situation and to unite it: to make up an outside enemy! And Georgia’s president Hitl… Saakashvili did it. Now he will have a pretext to beg for Western aid (in cash, please!).
By the way, if the landlord breaks, in the middle of the night, into the house of his tenant, shoots dead the tenant’s wife and children and says, with a smoking gun in his hand: “I am restoring my legitimate order. And I seek peace.”, what would be your response like? Didn’t he really mean “requiescat in pace”? And that’s how Georgia acted!

I am shocked how western media show situation and whole conflict. Even BBC shows mostly conflict from Russian point of view, not Georgian. This is partially because Georgia is cut off from Internet, phones don’t work etc. but it’s def. not proper journalism and not proper information.
The true is that Georgia started military operation on region that _is_ officially part of their territory, and that Russians since ‘89 wanted to take by settlers, and supporting rebeliants. No country in the world supported independence of SOuth Ossetia. Russians “peacekeepers” forces are de facto foreign military forces on territory of Georgia.
I don’t want to be ashamed by how EU behaves again. That was the situation on wars in Balkan states. Georgia is part ow western culture, it’s one of first christian countries in the world, it wants to join NATO and UE. And Russia? Russia just showed is not country that can be trusted.

Anyone who knows even a little history about Georgia knows that they have never attacked any people or country and have always been the defenders not aggressors, not to mention a very small country.
Further, it was Russia who so long ago took Georgian people out of their land in the middle of the night to commit genocide on the Georgians as well as transport masses to lands which they did not belong, trying to turn them into Russians.
They took peoples from many of their lands and transported them to Russian territories, gave them Russian identities and forced them to become and finally believe they were Russians. Of course, there are Russians in South Ossetia; Russians too were transplanted in former days.
Now, Russia just wants Georgia to be theirs once again and do not want any of the former Soviet countries to live independently. The closer Georgia, and also Ukraine, get to Europe or joining NATO, the more aggressive Russia has become in the past few years.
Russia could not hit Georgia in any way but militarily now because they ran out of all other options. Russia cut off oil to Georgia, so they’d have no heat in winter. That didn’t work. They cut off Georgian exports to Russia, so they’d have no income from the massive former USSR; that didn’t work; and they planted moles throughout the country to undermine the democratic government and try to corrupt the brave spirits of Georgians. I ask who are the aggressors here?
Does Russia want to completely lose a country with people who have such a strong spirit they have fought to remain independent, democratic and free from the Soviets many times throughout decades?
Each time Georgia has claimed their independence, Russia has perpetrated despicable acts against the Georgians, and similarly, against many of their other nations, not theirs to begin with.
Does anyone with half a brain think that Georgia would attack another country or territory with less than 5 million of their own population and an army so small that their numbers do not equate to a small township in America?
Would you think it wise for a developing Georgia to wake up one day and say, “Oh yes, I think I’ll attack a Russian territory today or South Ossetia for that matter? That will certainly help development.”
South Ossetia is part of Georgia and not a Russian territory or nation. The Russians know that if they can penetrate Georgia through South Ossetia that it will be easier to cripple Georgia once again, and thus take over the Georgian land once again.
And what have the Russians done so far? They have penetrated Georgia, a sovereign nation, with their bombs, military might and other weaponry. It is not just in South Ossetia these crimes have occurred. The penetration has been felt all the way to the capital of Georgia, Tbilisi!
Is this the new Russia, so free and democratic with their rhetoric? I think not! The Russian government has never changed; they just took a breather to gird up once again to hungrily consume other people and nations that have not bowed to them.
Have we forgotten how the Russian government managed to take back all their utilities from those who had built it up after the USSR fall? And how about the oil companies who were also exploring and finding oil in Russia, just to be ousted out of their finds by the Russian government. Does this mean nothing? No, it means that Russia will not sleep, ever, until they take back all they once had and through their usual hateful and detestable deeds.

What’s about the war, I think it’s stupid to disput abuot who’s to blame, much wiser is to talk about what’s to do. The war MUST be stopped at all costs! Well, not all of course, I mean that act of genocyde against Ossetian people (it is the second time Georgia does it, first try was 15 years before) cannot stay unpunished. Saakashvili and other… misters who is guilty in it should be judjed in Gaague tribunal as war criminals, because their methods are methods of fachists, adn if they wont be stopped, the consiquences will be catastrophic! And of course all foreign troops must leave the country after that.

Village of Khetagorovo (Tzunar) had been under severe artillery fire for the last two days. Four resident houses had been burned down completely, approximately 25% of all civilian dwellings had been damaged. Two civilians were killed - retired man and woman, another two persons had been hurt.
Doesnt matter who started this conflict. Only the Life matters. Killing civilians at night with bombs in your own country - what a true democratic action!

the “wounded” guy is being hold by his “reletive” on the first one and on the second one he’s just lying face down. weird? also he is supposed to be a “victim” of an airstrike committed by “Evil Russians” and it is strange that he’s dead while having no serious wounds. i really doubt that abit of the blood on his head was caused by a piece of shell that was stuck in his head and had been taken out by his “relative”.
