I don't really know what hapenning in Bulgaria. We should hear more from Bulgarian bloggers. One thing I can say. When average Bulgarians go to the streets to demonstrate, it's not good.

The intensive coverage of high-level corruption in the national media distracts from the political issues that should be discussed between professional politicians (and non-politicians) . People are spending more time talking about alleged corruptive practices than talking about how to spend public money properly.

Convicted politicians and business-people should go to jail and/or pay their fines. The should stop blaming each other and do what they have been elected for: Guiding their countries (or whatever administrative area they are responsible for).

I think that the frequent scandalisation of high-level corruption is a necessary but not sufficient condition of the fight against corruption that the European Commission (among other things) is trying to foster with its monitoring.

There is a need to scandalise mid- and low-level corruption that do not involve sums above 10,000 €, because then individual citizens will start to feel more responsible for their own actions and those of their peers.

If giving and taking a 5-50 Euro bribe will be proscribed, children who might later become politicians would learn from their earliest years that bribing is wrong and would have much more hesitation to take money or gifts later on...
