Hello, everyone.

I am an Ecuadorian and I love Japanese culture. Actually, I serve as a TV monitor for NHK World TV. I've never heard of this story in the media, and I swear I will not repeat such false story to anybody. The best way to counter a false rumor is by not repeating it, remember it.

Just a clarification: the comment by the person who signed their name as "Global Voices Online" does not reflect the opinion of the author of this post, or of Global Voices as an organization, on this issue.

Personally I don't agree with the comment at all. The outrage about WaiWai targeting Mainichi newspaper may be coming out in extreme ways, but it is not unjustified. The key point in this case is that Mainichi is not just some website, it is Japan's third largest newspaper and what it publishes carries a certain level of credibility.

Despite arguments to the contrary, there were actually many people who were taking WaiWai articles as fact. (As an example, a report on human trafficking by the Organization of American States actually quoted WaiWai.)

I gotta agree with Global Voices. People need to chill. WaiWai, as the name itself suggests, was never meant to be taken seriously. If I wanted to read serious Japanese news, I'd read Japan Times, Yomiuri, etc, and not WaiWai. I think its very hypocritical for anyone to say that WaiWai potrays Japanese in a bad light when we see kids and oyagis reading pornography and violent manga on the trains and convenience stores everyday.

I actually enjoyed all of articles translated on to Waiwai. They are all especially the same articles published in the Japanese tabloids which everyone reads anyway. WaiWai was the only place to find translated versions of the same crap which we all enjoy. You choose what junk you want to read and I have to say most printed material is absolute crap especially sports papers and tabloids, but who cares. We know 50% or more on the News is baloney.

Jason,

With all due respect, I think you're over-reacting a bit. Many friends I have use the term "san" (in English) in an endearing sense. I really don't think tomoko was using it to "patronize" you.
