I wanted to add a comment about sacred music and commerce. I am a friend of Abderrahim Amrani Marrakchi, the leader of the Hamadcha Sufi music group that performed in the most recent festival. Through my studies and friendship with him I have come to know of the challenges that traditonal musicians face in the preservation of their art, providing for their families and promoting their music to a large audience. The bottom line is musicians need to be able to provide for themselves and their families and find a way to preserve and continue their art. I commend the organizers of the festival for providing a platform for artists to do this. Also the festival promotes a spirit of religous and cultural tolerance that the world needs more of these days. Let us not become so academic in our analysis of culture and spiritual events that we are led away from enjoying and supporting the arts.
