Hello,

I read with great interest this article & I also agree that women especially single ones who would like to travel to Egypt must be aware of the Egyptian male behaviour & culture.

Personally I am happily married & I have a kid but this did not bother a 25 years old Egyptian. He sexually harassed me even if I was modestly dressed.

I think has to do with the way the boys are grown up.

:-) regards

Amy !
I agree very far with that you said, only i would like to add, that some poeple mix between lets say "good" sex and the kind of emotional symptoms following after on the one side and the so called love on the other side.
After all one can notice the difference simply on the simple fact, that love is that kind of emotion, under which one is still wantting that beloved even if she/he would once stink between the feet.... !

dear Lewis !

there r always many ways to represent ones point of wie, i always tend to objectives.

u can never come to a constructive understanding for such a topic with out paying a great attention for at the first place culture back ground as well as the pesonal social atiitude of both (for example) candian tourists and egyptian men

sex tourisem takes place not only in Hurghada, but as well in many other places on earth starting from spain going through east Europe till south eastern Asia.

As International Private lawyer, who is for this reason envolved in many legal disputes between tourists and locales, i must surprise u when i tell u that u will almost always find the reason for such inconvinient incidences on both sides

I still remember Hurghada of the late 1980, where locales were almost so shy that they could hardely aproch touristes, now they turned to became so far dare.
the Nummber of those dare ones is increasing to build the majority, that is to say to meet the increasing demand of the avrage female tourist comming to the place.

one can hardly ignor the financial and the social climate of both parties if one wants to come to an objective conclussion.

Dear all,
Sure the Egyptian law differentiate between Christian canadian wife and muslim egyptian man.
This is very simple, cause there are already racial discrimination against christian copts in Egypt !
women who are searching for just a strong body to fulfill their needs must tolerate the consequences and that can happen from Egyptian men as well as Canadian men or any other
nationality.

Please note that there are nearly 18 millions of christian Egyptians in Egypt ...

Christian egyptians treated badly from their own government and on the same time west treat them as arabs , BUT they ARE NOT ARABS! For god sake they are suffering from both sides internal and external! , and their customs and habbits are completely different from muslimd.
1- no divorce in christianity
(no thoughts about divorce in the future especially with catholic and orthodox )

2- no 4 women allowed to marry as in ISLAM ( no cheating with other women)
3- no fighting about the relegion of your children in the future.

So please there must be a distinction between arabic or coptic Egyptians!

The bu*****t that foreign women can't resist in Egypt is what kills me. I am a man, not Egyptian, but stayed in Egypt for a while. I speak Arabic so it was easy to understand what these folks are all about. Egyptian men in general have had a long history of poverty and living in austerity, when they, for example, pay more than half of their wages on transportation costs. As a result of corruption and lack of opportunities, they developed a skill called in Egyptian Arabic \Awanta\. Awanta means persuasion by sweet-talk. The principle applies to every thing: haggling, conning a woman, convincing someone to get married to him, securing a deal, or even getting a job ...etc. The main thing about Awanta is that it's always sugar-coated and will always fool anyone, particularly those foreign women who come to Egypt dreaming of the sun, the Pharaohs, the pyramids and why not a bit of romance? My advise is that mingle only with high-class Egyptians, who, although might be after casual sex, will not steal your money/mobile/purse. A traffic policeman, taxi driver, doorman, waiter, someone talking to you in the street are all red flags that one should be cautious about. Another tip, is to know this phrase: \Kifaya ya awantagi!! (g as in game)\. It means: \Enough you Awanta-man!!\. The fact that you know this sentence would surprise them, and they will know that you're not an easy prey. That all this happens in Egypt, is, at the same time, a very sad thing, and it shows how the failure of the state is transforming people, who look for a win-win situation at any cost, regardless of the values advocated by Islam - as all these men/women would love to tell you a lot about!!!

It certainly doesn't sound like you're a fool, so I truly recommend that before you actually do marry you consult a good lawyer to be sure that both of you understand the fascinating vagaries of Egyptian law. Just recently an Italian friend of mine who has been happily married to a lovely Egyptian man and is the mother of two almost adult girls told me that a lawyer friend of hers had informed her that because she is Christian and her husband is Muslim, if she owned any buildings or land they would be seized by the government when she died rather than going to her daughters. I was astonished but she said that she'd checked it with another lawyer and this was in fact the case. As it happens, she only owns a couple of horses that board with me and we've agreed to care for them should anything ever happen to her.

One of the biggest mistakes that both Egyptians and foreigners make is to assume that they understand the family law that will apply.

I am a western european girl who has now been to egypt on two seperate occassions and was always treated with alot of respect. One worker in my hotel followed me a bit and said he was crazy for me but when he realised that it was inappropriate he apolgised and said he was extremely sorry if he offended or frightened me. Yes alot of very young egyptian men asked for dates etc but I politely told them I was not interested (with a smile) and was left alone. On the last day of my first visit I met a lovely egyptian man who was very respectful and we kept in daily contact and we spent 5 days together on my second visit (no sex as I am sure alot of you are thinking or money involved, he is a very proud man) he paid for everything on my trip. I am going agin in a few weeks with my 3 year old daughter (from a very bad and abusive relationship) and he is very excited about meeting her. He has told his family about me and wants us to meet his family and said that I have great respect for myself and that this is very unusual for egyptian men to find in places like Sharm El Sheik as most european women have sex very freely. He says he does not want to lose me and wants us to marry in the future and live in egypt which is something I am considering as I was planning on moving to a warm country next year anyway. This man is very loving, caring, considerate to my feelings and also very respectful and because we do not have sex he respects me very much. I have no reason not to trust this man and over the last 6 months have fallen very much in love with him. Yes, there are lots of problems in egypt but other countries also but if you respect yourself then you will have respect shown to you. If anybody feels I am a fool, then please feel free to reply

I agree that the warning is a bit harsh (as all embassy warnings are), and I don't think that all Arab men deserve to be painted with the same brush, but having said that, I also know what living in an Arab country (Morocco) is like for a foreign woman - while it's certainly not ALL men who harass, I can also say I never went a whole day without being harassed by at least two people (something that's more like a once-a-month occurrence back home). No, not all men do it, but a high enough percentage do to call it a trend.

Tamina:

I'm not sure how the two are related?? What does their responsibility to support their families have anything to do with them preying on unsuspecting Westerner women? We are talking about the Egyptian men who go about seducing western women like it's some kind of game and find it acceptable behavior. I know the responsibilities and the pressures that is on "some" Middle Eastern men to provide for the families, I know some of them who are feeling this pressure, but it has no relation or excuses their ill-placed behavior.
Of course, coming from a man who doesn't even live in Egypt, I would be happy if they just kept their crappy behavior to themselves, but they don't! They spread it around Europe like a festering Herpes Blister that us Western men have to deal with like a migraine because we are the ones left picking up the mess after the Hurrican has already passed!! It's very annoying for the man to say the least and very inappropriate for the women who are left with a broken heart or worse, a broken home and family!!

I’m not sure how the two are related?? What does their responsibility to support their families have anything to do with them preying on unsuspecting Westerner women? We are talking about the Egyptian men who go about seducing western women like it’s some kind of game and find it acceptable behavior. I know the responsibilities and the pressures that is on “some” Middle Eastern men to provide for the families, I know some of them who are feeling this pressure, but it has no relation or excuses their ill-placed behavior.
Of course, coming from a man who doesn’t even live in Egypt, I would be happy if they just kept their crappy behavior to themselves, but they don’t! They spread it around Europe like a festering Herpes Blister that us Western men have to deal with like a migraine because we are the ones left picking up the mess after the Hurrican has already passed!! It’s very annoying for the man to say the least and very inappropriate for the women who are left with a broken heart or worse, a broken home and family!!

thanx for ur reply
You made a good point when it comes to a different attitude towards women(because men are treated with respect in comparison). One Egyptian guy in shop explain as for 30 minutes why girls are lazy and they only depend on men(I know it is a different culture but it doesn't make it for me less offensive) and he was there to sell goods not educate us.
When it comes to deceit I know it is poor country but it is not an excuse to try to trick us and be happy about it. I know they want to support their families but I don't think they do it just by wanting to sleep with us(which is not right according to their religion and they all emphasize how religious they are).
