My first time on this website and happy to have found it!
Greetings to all from Bandon, Oregon. I so enjoyed a visit to Hungary in 1986 and again in 1995, enjoyed the food, wine and people. Since then I have sought two recipes: 1. Pork 'Brasso' which was served in my hotel on Andrassi Utca. I've been told it was Yugoslav in origin but it was so delicious that I ordered it three times over several days. 2. Seeking a recipe for - and I must write phonetically as I do not know Hungarian - "Horto-Bash." This is a meat filled crepe of sorts and very tasty.
Must try some of those delightful looking cakes when I'm next in Hungary. I'll be in Russia next month for two weeks so if anyone has suggestions on a good place to dine for the authentic cusine, please let me know.

I found it! It wasn't easy, but it was worth it! Auguszt Coffee House is the most charming little cafe in downtown Budapest! It is well hidden in a beautiful courtyard in the busy downtown (Kossuth Lajos street). I found it by accident, I guess its mostly the locals that go there. It is old-fashioned, beautiful interior with wooden carvings and chandeliers. The owner lady was very nice, told me that she was the fifth generation in the family, which has been continuing this business since 1870!

The cakes all looked really good. We tried the traditional Eszterházy (nuts, vanilla cream and white chocolate) and their Kremes, which looked a bit like a home made pastry, but was absolutely delicious!

Andrew,

Eger may be famous for its "bull's blood" wine, but if you have drunk any you will know that it is far from full-bodied. Eger is at the northern limits for producing red wine, and is suitable more for Bourgogne-style Pinot Noirs than full-bodied Bordeaux-style reds. By far the best region in Hungary for high quality red wine is Villány in the south-west near Pécs. This region has a micro-climate that enables the production of very full-bodied wines using the Bordeaux grape varieties.

As for Tokaj, besides Szepsy I would also recommend the wines of János Árvay, which he produces under the Hétfürtös label.

I am happy that I live near Hungary (Krakow, Poland - ap. 300 km). speaking about Hungarian wines, look at:
- smallest wine region "Somlo" and its fabulous white wines (esp. from Bela Fekete). - Badacsony region - the Huba Seremley wineyards (with marvellous white pinot noir!). - Eger region famous for the strong, full bodily an tanin red wines called there a "bulls blood". Winery: Tibor Gall, And last but not least: TOKAJ, famous Tokaj, unusuall sweet wines with wxcellent and perfectly balanced acidity. The region is picturesque, winery: Disnoko, Oremus, Degenfeld, Istvan Szepsy
