It's common knowledge that Chinese fields are often fertilized with human waste, and irrigated with water polluted with sewage. This minor outbreak doesn't really trouble the government, there are 1.4 billion people here.

Like the Polio Virus, Enterovirus 71 has a fecal-oral spread. It is not all that unusual in child daycare situations. Quite possibly the nutritional and thus the immunological status of the children so adversely affected as to cause mortality is poor. The small city in China, Fuyang, is located along the shore of what appears to be either a river or a canal. This virus lives for many weeks in water and soil and is shed from the intestinal tract of its victims for several weeks after the acute phase of the illness has passed. This complicates containment. At least with Polio, there is a vaccine. With this virus, which usually is not a severe infection, there is not.
