The head of UN just went into Burma (23 may 2008) talking with the psychopathic junta. who have just promised (are you kidding), promised, to let the foreign aid agencies in . Don't hold your breath.
The Junta must now be brought to trial in the International Court in the Hague for Crimes Against humanity.
Whose got the balls to bring them in??

I have to say the alert system is always there and cyclone is much easier to be detected than tsunami. India has issued warnings several days before. This is a matter whether Bruma junta considered it seriously.

im only 16 and i still feel for all those children who are now alone and all the parents who now have lost everything.
i totally agree that countries like burma and others need to have better alert systems so they can be better prepard for cyclones and earthquakes as such.
first wolrd countries like ours and america should lead by example and help rebuild these peoples lives and give back to their community by sending care packages like we did when the tsunami hit bali or by going over there and looking after the children, providing medical aid, giving extra hands to build and find the lost.
these are the times when we need to prove that we are part of the human race by hlping our fellow man when they're in trouble.

I don't think it is Perfect Storm nor unprecedented cyclone. Taiwan has been hit by two storms in the same or higher magnitude within 2 weeks in 2003. This kind of cyclone is everywhere. (The cyclone at the east of Taiwan at early May , w03, is truly Perfect Storm, or we called it Super typhoon)

I think the problem is absence of cyclone alert, absence of preparation, and slow relief work.

I echo the sentiments provided in above comments.

Cyclone Nargis is a Category 3 storm packed winds of 190 km (120 mile) per hour. However BBC quoted a wrong info that It was the world’s deadliest storm in ten years. Only last November (2007) The hurricane Sidr made a downfall in Southern Bangladesh - it was a Category-4 equivalent tropical cyclone with 215 km/h wind speed and water surge of Tidal waves reaching up to a height of 3 metres (9.8 ft) were reported. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sidr)

It may be noted that Bangladesh did prepare a lot for SIDR. A total of 2 million people in Bangladesh evacuated to emergency shelters. Otherwise the death toll would be catastrophic. Most of those who were dead defied the warnings and stayed home. The after cyclone relief and rescue operations were also swift. Over 40,000 Red Cross volunteers were deployed to order residents in the 15 affected provinces into special cyclone and flood shelters. In contrast to the Burmese situation, The Bangladeshi military forces played a significant role in providing helicopters and boats to reach to remote locations and of course helping in relief and rescue.

What did the Burmese Government do to protect its people? Eyewitnesses say that even no forces were seen to help cleanup the debris in the capital.

I read about this in New York Post's breaking news section and the death toll is apparently well past 22,000! 41,000 are still missing too which means that the 22,000 number will probably be a lot higher.

That is a good question about whether or not the military was aware of the cyclone. I think it would be dependent on how many of the military was effected by the cyclone. If no one was injured by it, you probabloy can make the assumption that the military knew in advance about it, but if there were many military deaths related to the cyclone then they probably were not aware.

The above post brings up some excellent questions, who knew about this cyclone, and whom was told in advance. There is not an acre of land on the entire planet that someone, somewhere is not watching at all times. If it comes out in the aftermath that the Burmese government knew of the disaster beforehand and did nothing, will they be tried in World Court? Will they be held responsible for anything?

the nargis.

it is unfortunate that thousands of lives is lost forget about the properties and goods being destroyed, by the nargis in Myanmar.

the people said that government have not warn them of the impending danger. I wonder if the military government knows it them self or where also caught by surprise.

what about the other neighboring countries. in an advance country people are alway warn well on time and the evacuation executed to a safer places.

the outer space being congested with satellites, was it not noticed by any country ? it they do, have they not have the moral responsibility to warn Myanmar?

it should have been the best justice realized, on the part of advance countries towards the developing or poor nations- but they have not rise to the occasion. it is absolute absence of humane.
