This little blurb from John Kennedy predictably glosses over what is really occurring in Zimbabwe--especially the Anglo-American hand in sponsoring, financing, and promoting the MDC itself.

The propaganda narrative of the CNN shills, or the equally vacuous bloggers like Kennedy goes something like this:
"Evil-doer Robert Mugabe is cracking down on freedom-loving democratic MDC supporters, while China supplies guns to Mugabe."

This type of pablum is what passes for news in USA and Canada's capitalist press, but it ignores the real stakes involved.

Namely, the West is supporting and financing (and most likely arming) the MDC because it promises to implement Western Neoliberal market reforms, whereas Mugabe has adopted a more nationalistic economic agenda. Part of this agenda that the "democratic" West cannot stand is Mugabe's expropriation of land from the Anglo Colonialist-farmers, whose wealth and property were derived from British colonial rule.

Given that the USA and Canada are themselves Anglo Colonizer nations based upon the theft and occupation of Native Indian/First Nations' land (not unlike British-ruled Zimbabwe), you can see why the USA, UK, and Canada are so hostile to Mugabe and his land expropriation policy.

There's nothing that makes an Anglo Colonizer throw a fit that challenging his precious private property "rights."

Indeed, perhaps there needs to be a Zimbabwe model applied to Canada or the USA by the Native Indian nations that currently live under Anglo rule. ;)

The dispute between the MDC and ZANU-PF is ultimately based upon two economic agendas in conflict: MDC's agenda is a Neoliberal model favored and pushed by Western predator nations (like the US, UK, and Canada) around the world, while ZANU-PF is an economic nationalist one.

This is the core issue that mainstream Anglo propaganda shills gloss over. Rhetoric about "democracy" and "human rights" are merely political slogans Anglo media mouthpieces manipulate to obscure this essential reality.

To Wei and to Wong-

I should have mentioned that I have been looking at a lot of different sites with comments, especially on the recent events in Tibet. Most of these comments were written in English, so there was no selection involved. I was hoping that there would be some moderate comments from Chinese people on what had happened and reflecting on the Chinese government’s policy there. But I was shocked at the almost complete unanimity and recitation of the government’s propaganda on the issue. There was virtually no sense of reflection, of national self questioning, or doubt about the policy taken. Many people also claimed to be overseas Chinese and were saying almost the exact same kinds of things.

I don’t think the comparison to right wing American perspectives is accurate, because one can always find progressive, critical voices on the War in Iraq in the US, even if they might not be in the majority. While there is a group that is “right wing”, there is also a group that is “progressive”,or left wing. In the case of China, I could find no more than a handful of intellectuals and one overseas Chinese person taking a “moderate” stance on Tibet. So there’s practically no progressive voice that I could find.

Of course the vast majority of Chinese citizens do not use the internet, and I have no way of knowing what they think. It may be that some Chinese people have access to the internet but did not feel like they could criticize the government’s policy for whatever reason.

I have not made a final determination on the Tibet issue, because it is quite complicated, but I am skeptical of the idea that the government’s version is 100% correct.

I may be completely wrong about this and if so, please inform me. As I said I was hoping to find moderate, reflective voices, but sadly that is not what I’ve seen. If anyone knows where these progressive voices are, please tell me as I would really like to hear them. This is one case in which I would really like to be wrong.

Tree said: "The disturbing thing about all these messages is their virtual unanimity- 90% of these people are saying the same thing- and some using very aggressive language.

It is giving Chinese people a very bad image."

It's unfair to make a judgment on 1.3 billion Chinese just because of some handpicked comments on a foreign blog. It would be like a Chinese blogger taking comments from Little Green Footballs and other right-wing websites and translating them into Chinese as examples of American netizens defending the invasion of Iraq.

I have no problems with bashing the Chinese government but it's alarming that the trend is being extended to ordinary Chinese people.

Getting tired of talking this topic, actually now when China this word is concerned, someone would jumped out and put plenty of their reasons to complain or blame on China's everything.
Such a topic sometimes only arouse the pin-struggle among the Chinese and non-Chinese.
I don't think it reasonable for this topic poster to post such subject.
Our aim is to TRY to understand each other on the globe, not to stir up one ridiculous subject for people to fight each other or to treat as foe or enemy to each other.

On any China issues to be posted or not, I just give one hint for all the people to think it over.
If think China is always wrong, hope you think why so many Chinese support it. Do you really think most Chinese are idiots. (Don't say brain-washed any more. that's absolutely not reliable. you can identify it from the passing years' issue blaming on Chinese no human rights or something. But this time, for Olympics, for such a strange topic of normal arm deal, why so many Chinese came out to point out their different opinions)
Thank you all.

Well, if China does not sale guns and bombs to Zimbabwe someone else will. TRUE! but that does not justify China selling guns and bombs to Mugabe. Neither should any other country be selling guns to him.

Violance will not stop by taking China out of the equation. But if China is providing guns and bombs doesn't that make the violance against innocent people worse?

frustratedperson,

As you wrote it is about zimbabwe and not China. If you take China out of the equation for a moment, would the violence simply stop? Would flow of weapons simply stop? If you are honest then the answers are no. Granted, Chinese gun merchants are greedy and uncaring. The Chinese government is greedy and uncaring, but which gun merchant isn't greedy and uncaring? Which government doesn't put profits before the lives of people in other countries? I would argue that most governments, including China, put profits even before segments of its own citizens.

On the whole gun topic, you should be familiar with the saying “Guns don’t kill people, people do”. Rather than blaming the Chinese government maybe you should look into the reasons why Africans want to kill each other this badly and no one is standing up for it. Furthermore, capitalism dictates that if China does not sell guns someone else will.

The above statement made here is typical china ass wiping of the ability to help nourish Africa to Health instead they rather see people hurt and starve so they can take advantage of a starving countries RESOURCES !!!!
Yes people kill people not the gun !! But when you Fuel killing like china did in Africa it Becomes a sciatic nerve in all the world ,,China's only relations in the world are MONY ,,America has shed her blood for other countries FREEDOM,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,,, not china

The Man,

I am not sure if you are aware of this or not, but Affirmative Action actually hurts Asian Americans by limiting their chances of getting into the top colleges in the US due to race based quotas. But then again, what does Chinese Americans have to do with the Chinese government in China?

On racism in China, the concept is still foreign since most of the Chinese are homogeneous. There are affirmative action like programs for minorities within China but not different races. Since you claim you have lived in China before, you should have noticed that for the most part Chinese judge people of other races by wealth more than anything else.

On the whole gun topic, you should be familiar with the saying "Guns don't kill people, people do". Rather than blaming the Chinese government maybe you should look into the reasons why Africans want to kill each other this badly and no one is standing up for it. Furthermore, capitalism dictates that if China does not sell guns someone else will.

Sir America

How to manipulate the other country's currency? Only exchange rate can be manipulated.

Why not America also manipulate the Chinese RMB?

As you shouted " shame on the chinese people", I think you make US people lose face.

Sir, John Kennedy, I thought you were doing moderation, are you still there, sir? helllllloooooo?

@America,

If you can not even write decent English, then stop complaining about China. Chinese do not want RMB to rise, because it means more expensive for her people. U.S. forces China to raise RMB! If you do not even understand this concept, then keep neutral. Study more history, learn to write correct English. We speak and write multiple languages, so it's understandable that our English grammar is not perfect! If you can only speak/write one language, shame on you. By the way, you should learn to speak Chinese before you comment!

As Terry said, "With several thousand years of history, we still have more to study and realize its depth" in reference to the Chinese Language
