The reason behind the high number of peruvian inmigrants in Italy is the need for people able to care for the senior citizens in this country since not many italian family members are willing to do so. Until the eighties, Spain allowed south americans to reach spain with out a visa, just a passport. This caused the wave of inmigration to the country. Problem was people migrating counted for the lower classes of the southamerican countries. When The EU opened its boundaries, Spain changed its inmigration regulation making it necessary to get a visa besides passport. Visas are still hard to get nowadays for poor people because thelegal inmigration channels require you to have a minimum deposit of 500 euros for everymonth spent in “tourism”. This is how a new mafia was created to allow peruvians to reach other destinations, like italy-perhaps due to the similarity of the language. Families in Italy, because of the industrialization, have little or no time to take care of their elders or make children (check birth rates from the 80 till now). Peruvians,along with romanians and ucranian women started to create a workforce to fulfill this role: elders’ caretakers. Along with the women, came the sons, and daughters and husbands. Problem is most of this people had a low level of education or technical preparation which made it difficult for them to earn a living an derouting to all sorts of illegal behaviour: criminality, drug trafficking, gangs and mafias, prostitution.

We have better examples of our musical culture. This WS case is a mess (I can see that almost everybody´s agree)and bizarre. Give the chance to others with more musical skills to be heared.

It is because this video reached viral status that people *are* discussing issues like whether it shames or represents peruvians, whether it is “racism”, mockery, or we just don´t get it, and whether Wendy should be singing the songs she is…even though the topics are not unusual for other young andean music representantivs in her style, like Doris Rossel and Las Muchachitas del Amor.

Absent in these comments, though, and unrepresented on this online conversations are the crowds that you can see on footage of Wendy’s concerts, holding up posters of the “wonder girl of Folklore”. It seems she does have a following and supporters who don´t feel she is demeaning andean music, but instead, could believe she is giving andean music a breath of fresh air.

So it is great that this conversation is kept going, that we exchange opinions and continue discussing these issues.

Why do we need to promote demeaning videos that will give a bad impression about Andean people and cultures, when there are plenty of better examples of what we are all about?

I feel that someone thought “this girl is ridiculously funny, let’s join the mock” and that is a waste of resources and I believe is part of a racist way to put down our native peoples.

We don’t need those roles models, think about our youth. It is not a coincidence the Peruvian media is full of pornography, violence, alcoholism, racims and biased news. Not a coincidence.

We bloggers can lead a way to do what is right. Not join the evil.
