Repeated allegations of fraud especially after polls will weaken the case of democracy and implicitly pave way for a historical justification for usurpation of power by the army. Yes, it previously happened in Pakistan. Such allegations indiacate that the nation in question is woefully short of independent organizations, be it NGOs or some interest groups or non-partisan media. The core structure of democracy remains vulnerable as long as its supporting structures, as mentioned above, did not grow so much as to keep the erring sides within their limits.

In any election in any country at any time there will be a group of people who will say "election fraud" if the vote does not go the way they want it to. Elections are run by human beings who will make a mistake by and by. Having been an election judge in a US election, it is almost impossible to abide by each and every letter of the law that is written for elections.... At each election "something happens" that prompts someone to yell and scream "fraud, fraud, fruad... rigged election." This is not to say that the elections in Georgia were done 100% correctly but it is one of those things of whine, whine, whine, whine if the opposition happens to win..... The whiners should simply be happy that they were able to vote to begin with and that there were opposition candidates. For many years Georgia had but one candidated

More news on the election on russiatoday.ru

The Presidents's main opposition Gachechiladze, 43, wants to turn Georgia into a parliamentary democracy, limiting presidential power. -- This woudl bring Georgia more in line with European Democracies and mirrow the tarsnition from a presidnetial dictatorship to a Parliamentary democracy. A policy worthy of support.

'Violations' Alleged

Quote:

The opposition questioned the validity of the vote. ``We have concrete evidence that on many occasions and in many places, there have been serious violations,'' Tina Khidasheli, a leader of the opposition Republican Party, told a news conference today. She said that in some locations ``the number of people who voted exceeded the number of registered voters in that area'' and that ballot papers had been stolen.

It's not surprising that the West is approving a rigged election. They have supported draconian and brutal regimes such as Saudi Arabia and Egypt for decades.
