I remember having similar experiences. I grew up in late 80's. By that time, chowing gum was more widely available, and you were able to get it almost everywhere. Most gums had special wrappers with pictures of cars or various animals on them.

I remember how I used to collect those rather vigorously. I later used to exchanging them with my friends at the kindergarten or at the playing ground. I also remember giving those little treasures away before I left the Soviet Union back in 1990. I also remember how happy my friends were for receiving those wrappers.

Smarties (some sort of M&M's) on the other hand, were a rather rare commodity, especially for a kindergarten kid. The only time I ever had the chance to try those was when one of the other kids brought some with him. The kids' dad always went to various komanderovkas(business trips), and he always brought his son various western gifts, that we, the ordinary kids, were always jealous about.

Man, how times have changed since. Thanks for the reminding me of those good ol' times, its not often that I get to go down the memory lane and remember those happy simple days.
