I was in Dominica when the hurricane hit us. It started from Thursday evening when the water was cut off and then Friday early hours on the morning when the electricity was cut at 1.10 am. It was pitch black all you could hear was the rain and wind through the galvanised steel roof! I was on holiday in a village to the Northwest of the island called Colihaut for the reuninion. In the early morning the villagers could be seen outside making the most of the rain for washing purposes. Then there was a van playing Soca music being followed by a number of youths. I joined them for a time it was great fun especially when knocking on houses asking for alchohol beverages to keep us warm. There was virtually no damage to the village only debris. We did not venture out of the village, however, on Saturday we decided to see what was happening.

The airport was closed on Friday but reopened fully on Saturday. I was able to take my liat flight to Antigua on Sunday at 1645 on time and arrive in time for my BA Flight back to UK.

There were two deaths due to the hurricane. A lady and her son from Campbell. Where a landslide fell on her wooden house. Her body was found immediately but the boys was discovered the following day.

I have relatives in Sultan Estate area near Pond Casse and was able to contact them on the phone, but was unable to get to them as the road was blocked at the Layou river hotel. Part of the road had been completely sliced and fell into the river on the other bank coconut trees and other trees had fallen into the river! Approaching Sultan from the Canefield area there had been three landslides. This was all on Saturday.

On the way to the airport where the land was mainly flat the banana crops had been totally devasted. The trees had been broken in two. Estimating I would say at least 80% of each farmers crop had been destroyed.

Hurricane Dean info - Dominica...

A number of comments have been left at Global Voices requesting information on the situation in Dominica post-Hurricane Dean. thedominican.net looks like it could be a useful source. It also has a forum where people are posting reports and information....

To all concerned:

Please visit the website of the Dominica Broadcasting Corporation and www.thedominican.net for updates on the situation on the island following Hurricane Dean's passage.

News reports relate that the air and seaports are open for service, with the exception of the main airport at Melville Hall which will open at noon today, August 18, 2007. The civil defense authorities have matters well in hand and most phone land lines are operable as with cell phone service. Water and electricty services are now being restored. Most homes escaped unsacthed, with only 200 homes reporting damage. Roadways and bridges have sustained some damage and there was the regrettable loss of two lives; a mother and son at Campbell who were covered by a landslide.

10:30 Saturday, as I write power, water and landline telephones have not yet been restored in the north-east of the islands. Do not yet know about aircraft, but you could contact Liat Airlines to check the situation.
