We are beginning to see the true faces of this "quasi-military" regime currently in power. Arrests without rights to due process , tortured confessions , and conspiracies against political figures not towing its line of "so-called" reforms - all point to an autocratic arrogance that is not merely "overseeing" the country to a democratic election , but a military bent on destroying current nascent democratic structures to impose its "military rule" for years to come.

Interestingly, Sheikh Hasina's arrest came after she came out publicly to expose the DGFI - Directorate Of General Forces Intelligence - an intelligence arm trained and with close links with the dreaded Pakistan's ISI - the outfit deeply involved with cultivating and sustaining religious fanatism in that ill-fated country .She correctly pointed out that an intelligence agency entrusted with defending the country's sovereignity should not be used for narrow political aims of splintering political parties and running tortured confessions using public funds .

Sadly, I had welcomed the intial moves of this regime to weed out corruption , to ensure a true voter-list and a national ID system to ensure free and fair election - and the country would have been endebted to them forever if they stayed on that path. But, the "trappings of power" never fails - and now they have a different agenda and all the hidden faces are coming out of the woodwork.

Personally, I think they do not have a "Minus 2" agenda - regrettably they are either taking the paths to "The Burmese solution" or the failed "Pakistani Formula ". This is not only a disservice to the nation , but also to the majority of armed forces personnel who has earned a solid reputation as peacekeepers at a lot of war-torn areas of the globe.

The caretaker government gained popular support... hmm... who did the research, how was the data collected, what was the sampling strategy... the questions would go on and on. It is funny to hear people writing and talking about having faith in the military backed government, of which just about everything is done in secrecy without the semblance of transparency, and that they would restore democracy!!! And the blogger wrote in the original article - people thought and hoped for a government that would go a along way in terms of ensuring "ACCOUNTABILITY." :) Who are these generals accountable to? They are and could very well be accountable to each other, but to say they are accountable to us the people is not simply wishful thinking, it is naivete bordeing lunacy.

So - yes - make your own conclusion and know you GENERAL well... let me quote one of them, the head one at that...

It was a family get together... the head man along with the other cronies were there... his relatives are well placed in ARMY as well you know... a younger brother asked - Ki bhajan, are you going to make a Pakistan out of this? He replied... well, I wanted to do it stealthily, but she wouldn't listen. So, now I have to do what I have to do...

Ki bujhlen bhashob... There is no point in talking and theorizing as to why Hasina got caught now and not before and things like that.. the main point is - they are not going to let her be a part of the government... they are afraid... and now they have reached a point of no return... they will have to do it by hook or my crook. Legal marpech is just that... marpech... they do not care... they have EMERGENCY POWERS ACT and the INDEMNITY BILL... and of course bullets. WANNA NEGOTIATE - well that is exactly how they did it during remands and all..

Take care people,
