Lustration is the legalization of political and ideological purges. It's open to wanton abuse (the 'lustrators' are often the ones who ought to be 'lustrated' -- as is the case in Serbia). And that's why I am against it.

The courts ought to handle these cases separately, not some party courts.

BTW, where is that shoddy article about "fascism" in Serbia gone? I hope it's been pulled for the right reasons (i.e. racism, ethnic hatred and Serbophobia).

Here're two very informative blog posts on lustration elsewhere in the region, linked to here at Global Voices a while ago:

the beatroot on the verdict of the Constitutional Tribunal on Poland's Lustration Law;

Our Man in Tirana on why lustration is not likely to be carried out in Albania.

Hallo Rebecca,

Wikipedia says:

In the period after the fall of the various European Communist states in 1989–1991, the term came to refer to the policy of limiting the participation of former communists, and especially informants of the communist secret police, in the successor governments or even in civil service positions.

I think non-Eastern Europeans (including myself) have no idea what Lustration is. Can you please explain and define a bit more? I still don't know what it is after reading your post. Thanks.
