Jane Novak links to an article which states that 70 per cent of Yemeni women are abused. “More than 87 percent of those surveyed said that families are responsible for abuse and violence against women, as 191 of the registered cases, accounting for 35.9 percent of the total sample, complained that they are abused by their husbands while 186 of the registered cases (34.9) told that they are mistreated by their fathers,” said the study.

This is shocking. I’ve been touring for two weeks in Sanaa. I’m from the U.s. and I’ve heard vaugely of the abuses but had no idea that the rate of abuse was so high.

I would like to see the numbers and understand how many participated in this survey. I cant agree with these numbers.
I can’t believe that abuse percentage is true as much as Amirah’s said.I am living in Sana’a for 10 years and I have never heard something horrible like what she mentioned.
Any chance you never heard is because you’re a man and women don’t talk to strange men in Yemen, Ali? To do so might get them killed. Hmmmm?
I completely agree that the rate of violence against the Yemeni women is very high. However, it differs from area to another. There is less violence among the educated and civilized people. Even though there are consititutional laws that prohibits violence against women, they are not applied. LIVE LONG YEMENI FEMENISTS! GOD BLESS!
