Dina Mehta doesn't quite buy the concept of a Bloggers Code of Conduct. “It seems to me, culturally, it is a very North-American thing to think up. Don't get me wrong, I absolutely love some aspects of North America and have met some of the finest folks there - but this operating out of ‘fear' is one aspect I have written about earlier, that I find goes beyond protection.”

I see it this way. Blog is a public medium. It is subject to all the rules that apply to other public media like newspapers, magazines, radio, TV etc. The mere fact that a blog doesn’t have a publisher or editor different from the writer, doesn’t give it any undue privilege. In contrast, an email is a private medium. Even when a message is chain-forwarded, it still doesn’t qualify to catergorised as public medium.
Why is there such a need of monitoring every word on the face of any blog community when the “blog” is a personal space published by a single entity? It duznt happen to be a public medium…the “internet” is a “public medium” and my blog is a personal outlet for me and my ramblings which is accessible to the world through a public medium i.e.,its accessible to the world only if i want it to be.
On the contrary, any offensive blog displaying porn, warez or any other offensive and degrading material can be monitored by the authorities just like similar websites are.
Do I want a balding internet administrator reading through my blog and censoring me?
Censorship never worked in the past. It doesn’t work today, television and tinsel towns notwithstanding. What makes some people think that it is going to work today?
